Summary This position is within the FAA, Aviation Safety (AVS), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Civil Aerospace Medical Institute (CAMI), Medical Education Division (AAM-400). The Office of Aerospace Medicine develops and manages medical programs in support of Aviation Safety. AAM-400 is one of the two national AAM programs at CAMI responsible for designee policy, education, and quality management. Responsibilities Serves as a Medical Officer, International Regional Flight Surgeon, and is responsible for developing and communicating regional positions on Aerospace Medicine policy and operational issues. Ensures consistency in international regional program standards, policies, and operations. Manages the regional Aviation Medical Examiner (AME) Surveillance programs including selection, training, designation, re-designation, termination or non-renewal of designation. Represents the Federal Air Surgeon on all medical matters within their geographic area of responsibility. Serves as a Physician (Aviation Medicine) for AAM-400. Is the subject matter expert (SME) in the area of aerospace medicine as applied to the education of AMEs, the designee doctors for AAM. AAM-400 serves as the FAA's medical focal point in directing and coordinating the activities of national and international graduate medical education. Provides functional medical leadership for medical training and certification under minimal direction of the division manager. Assumes the duties of the Division Manager in their absence. Responsible for coordinating and ensuring the continuing medical education programs meet the quality requirements necessary for approval by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education and the Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons Association. The certification of the AME seminars, distance learning training events, related documentation, and other products must meet the specifications as outline by the certifying medical association. As the functional SME, co-leads with the technical SME in the development and implementation of AME training systems, including seminars, distance learning programs, and emerging educational platforms. Program success depends on administration of a centralized program for the selection, designation, training, and management of physicians appointed to conduct physical examinations and issue medical certificates on behalf of the Federal Air Surgeon and the FAA to airmen throughout the United States and abroad. Under the direction of the division manager, works closely with the federal agencies, international designees, and military services (Army, Air Force, and Navy) in appointing and management of Aviation Medical Examiners in the program. Involved in the development of aeromedical curricula, administration, arrangement of professional seminars, workshops, and training for pilots, inspectors, and other aviation personnel. Seminars and training include global survival, medical aspects of aircraft accident investigations, Aerospace/Occupational Medicine, and aeromedical/physiological training. Provides guidance and interfaces with the Deputy Director and AAM HQs in the development and implementation of a Safety Management System and risk-based activities associated with a broad range of aeromedical and aviation safety reference/research programs such as Aviation medicine, forensic medicine, basic bio-medical sciences, occupational health, human factors engineering, psychology, transportation safety, and other related areas. Highly involved with the foreign medical officer program. Coordinates and develops the training agenda in coordination with the other divisions and oversees specific projects tasked to the foreign medical officers. Contacts are internal and external to the agency including CAMI leadership, Office of Aerospace Medicine, and the Federal Air Surgeon. Works closely with AAM's Policy Division and the nine Regional Flight Surgeons, with other Lines of Business, and FAA organizations such as Office of Security, General Counsel's Office, Military Medical Authorities, Foreign Government equivalents of the Office of Aerospace Medicine and other organizations within the Federal Government and Academia. Qualifications Basic Requirements: Degree: Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine or equivalent from a school in the United States or Canada. This degree must have been accredited by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (external link); Association of American Medical Colleges (external link); Liaison Committee on Medical Education (external link); Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association (external link), or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. (copies of transcripts must be uploaded) Degree from Foreign Medical School: A Doctor of Medicine or equivalent degree from a foreign medical school must provide education and medical knowledge equivalent to accredited schools in the United States. Evidence of equivalency to accredited schools in the United States is demonstrated by permanent certification by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (external link), a fifth pathway certificate for Americans who completed premedical education in the United States and graduate education in a foreign country, or successful completion of the U.S. Medical Licensing Examination. Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a Physician from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States. Graduate Training: Subsequent to obtaining a Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, a candidate must have had at least 1 year of supervised experience providing direct service in a clinical setting, i.e., a 1-year internship or the first year of a residency program in a hospital or an institution accredited for such training. For purposes of this standard, graduate training programs include only those internship, residency, and fellowship programs that are approved by accrediting bodies recognized within the United States or Canada. Descriptions of such programs are described below. An internship program involves broadly based clinical practice in which physicians acquire experience in treating a variety of medical problems under supervision (e.g., internal medicine, surgery, general practice, obstetrics-gynecology, and pediatrics). Such programs are in hospitals or other institutions accredited for internship training by a recognized body of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A residency program involves training in a specialized field of medicine in a hospital or an institution accredited for training in the specialty by a recognized body of the American Medical Association (external link), (AMA) or Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) (external link). A fellowship program involves advanced training (beyond residency training) in a given medical specialty in either a clinical or research setting in a hospital or an institution accredited in the United States for such training. AND Experience: All successful applicants must have three (3) years of graduate training in the specialty of the position to be filled (occupational medicine or aerospace medicine) or equivalent experience and training that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position and is typically in or related to the position being filled. For instance, equivalent training, education, and experience to satisfy the board certification competencies for aerospace medicine and/or occupational medicine as defined by the American Board of Preventive Medicine. AND Specialized Experience: Experience in determining the disposition of requests for special issuance; reviewing examiner performance and compliance against clearance criteria; and with the development and implementation of training systems i.e. seminars (instructor-led programs), distance learning programs, and emerging educational platforms.
