    Location Notice: The position requires the employee to travel up and down the NC coast with varying project assignments. Work schedule is 7 days on and then 7 days off. Living accommodations are provided onboard vessels during the 7-day working shift. Relocation to Currituck is unnecessary as the report station will be to project location at any of the Ferry Division terminals.

     

    The Marine Maintenance Unit conducts a variety of tasks including dredging, the installation, repair and maintenance of pilings, replacement of channel markers, construction and subsequent maintenance of dredge material placement sites, and the repair and maintenance of ramp and gantry systems at each NCDOT ferry terminal along the coast.

     

    This position is responsible for the operation, maintenance, and inspection of all engines and auxiliary equipment including pumps, generators, winches, and other mechanical, electrical, and electro-mechanical equipment on several floating assets within the unit. This includes a hydraulic cutter suction pipeline dredge, crane barge, four towing vessels and three barges. Work includes preventive maintenance and minor repair of the equipment and participation in major overhauls while vessels are dock side either at the Manns Harbor Shipyard or Cherry Branch Maintenance terminal. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Marine Maintenance Master and is evaluated through the safe and efficient performance of all equipment. Other duties may be assigned by management upon request.

     

    This is a permanent position with the state of North Carolina that offers all available state benefits including medical, leave options, and retirement.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    + Knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines; reduction gears; hydraulic, air and electric control systems; and vacuum and pressure pumps

    + Knowledge of the operating principles of reduction gears and hydraulic systems

    + Knowledge of the operating principles of air and electric control systems

    + Knowledge of the operating principles of vacuum and pressure pumps

    + Demonstrated ability to determine the cause of and procedures to follow in repairing malfunctioning equipment

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Graduation from High School or General Educational Development (GED) diploma with supplemental course work in diesel motor and electrical repairs and three years of experience in the maintenance, overhaul, and operation of industrial or marine engines powered by diesel fuel and gasoline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Requirements Transportation Worker Identification Credential Card (TWIC) issued by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) May require National Crane Operator certification, U.S. Coast Guard Master of Towing certification, and a Class A CDL.
