    Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

    Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of a Bachelor’s degree, four (4) years of full-time directly related experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four years may be considered. Must have, keep and maintain the appropriate valid NYS Driver’s License; have a motor vehicle record which is free from major violations or a pattern of repeat violations. **(***Out-of-State Applicants, see "Special Notes”).**

     

    In addition, the following valid and current certifications are required

    New York State recognized Hazardous Materials Operations Certificate. New York State recognized First Aid and CPR - D Certification. NYS Code Enforcement Official or must be able to obtain certification within one (1) year of employment. Possess NYS Firefighter 1 Certification or an equivalent.

    Brief Description of Duties:

    The Fire Marshal will provide comprehensive fire safety, emergency response, code enforcement, fire prevention, and education to the Stony Brook Southampton Campus. The Fire Marshal will provide emergency responses to fires, fire alarms, hazardous materials, spills and other emergency conditions. The selected candidate will perform inspections of buildings, extinguishers, and other fire protection equipment, conduct training for students and staff, and perform code reviews to ensure compliance with NYS Fire Codes. This position will also be responsible for implementing daily EH&S Safety activities, including, but not limited to conducting safety inspections, collecting hazardous waste, providing safety training, performing environmental monitoring, etc. The position will work closely with the EH&S Campus Safety manager, the University Police and Facilities.

     

    + Perform emergency response to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous material incidents, confined space incidents, and other campus emergencies. Initiate building evacuations, search and rescue operations, extinguish incipient fires, and coordinate the response outside assistance by local fire departments. Respond to, investigate and take appropriate action for fire alarm and protection system activations. Complete incident report.

    + Perform fire safety and extinguisher inspections and hazard assessments on all facilities, ensuring compliance with OSHA, NYS Fire Codes, NFPA Standards and Codes, and other applicable standards. Complete inspection and deficiency report, provide follow-up to ensure corrective action is taken, and maintain records of all activities. Accomplish miscellaneous fire prevention duties such as inspecting work sites and issuing hot work and confined space entry permits.

    + Conduct fire safety training for students, faculty, and staff to educate and inform the campus community of requirements and issues. Participate in new student and staff orientation programs. Organize and participate in fire prevention awareness activities and events. Attend required fire safety and other training and perform practical reviews as necessary to maintain certifications and proficiency in assigned tasks. Provide fire safety coverage for emergencies, impairments and special events.

    + Perform periodic inspection and testing of fire protection systems (e.g. standpipes, sprinkler systems, hydrants, etc.) in accordance with NFPA Standards. Conduct tests of the water supply system to ensure adequate fire flow for departmental operations. Assess requests for fire protection impairment operations. Monitor and track conditions to ensure restoration. Develop, complete, and maintain reports on all fire protection system testing/maintenance.

    + Implement the EH&S Campus Safety programs, including, but not limited to inspections of labs and other facilities, chemical inventories and SDS’s, environmental monitoring and inspections, hazardous waste collections, emergency planning, investigation of complaints, and other duties as assigned.

    + Conduct fire drills each semester and evaluate effectiveness of evacuations. Assist with the coordination, training and implementation of the Safety Warden and Fire Warden (UH) programs. Accomplish reports on all drills and training. Assist with the development of building emergency plans, evacuation plans, and fire department pre planning activities.

    + Review building plans and drawings for conformity with the NYS Fire Codes, National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes, and other applicable fire safety standards, to include checking compliance on the design/installation of all sprinkler systems, fire detection systems, and other fire extinguishing systems. Perform occupancy reviews of public areas to establish maximum occupancy requirements. Document, review and maintain records.

    + Responsible for the distribution and the installation of AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators). Assists with the recruitment and training of volunteer AED Operators. Maintain equipment and supplies, perform monthly inspections and required maintenance, participate in an annual drill, prepare and submit required reports.

    + Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

    Special Notes:

    This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Non Exempt position, eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA.

     

    **Essential Position:** This has been designated as an essential position based on the duties of the job and the functions performed. Positions that are designated as such may be required to report to work/remain at work even if classes are canceled, and the campus is working on limited operations in an emergency.

     

    Evening and weekend work will be required at times.

     

    In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

     

    ***Out-of-State Applicants: Please note as a condition of employment and in order for this position to be tendered, the successful incumbent will be required to provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the state issuing the license within five business days of a conditional offer and must obtain a NYS driver's license within 30 days of start date.
