    JOB SUMMARY Under general supervision, performs a variety of tasks related to land and engineering survey work for County projects. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

     

    Associate degree from an accredited college or university in Surveying, Drafting, Pre-engineering, or Geographic Studies, plus one (1) year of experience in a related field; OR three (3) years of experience in a related field; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

     

    Must have or be able to obtain a valid Utah driver’s license issued by the State of Utah to operate a County vehicle.

     

    Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

     

    Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through fingerprinting and enrollment in the continuous RAP Back (Record of Arrest and Prosecution Back) program in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    + Operates and maintains the field office and survey equipment.

    + Assists the Crew Chief in field calculations, data collection, and evaluation. Maintains complete and accurate survey field notes and assists in entering such notes in the County Surveyors' database.

    + Assists the Crew Chief in the deployment and use of safety equipment and traffic control procedures to ensure compliance with federal, state, and county regulations.

    + Operates equipment, collects data, and makes calculations necessary to record monuments and make determinations of the relative position of record vs. actual values.

    + Maintains the accuracy and integrity of Salt Lake County's survey control network.

    + Establishes and maintains an elevation benchmark system.

    + Assists in the monument preservation permit checking process.

    + Reads and interprets pertinent survey descriptions.

    + Investigates the validity of complaints and initiates corrective action by using appropriate county policies and procedures.

    + Achieves departmental goals and objectives by working with and sharing information between staff, departmental representatives, the public, and other agencies.

    + Recovers, manufactures, installs, repairs, references, and maintains an inventory of survey monuments and supplies. Coordinates the disbursement of monuments.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)

    Knowledge of:

    + Principles, methods, and techniques of land surveying

    + Engineering techniques and methods

    + Geodetic surveying and State Plane Coordinate System

    + Principles, methods, and techniques of effective traffic control

    Skills and Abilities to:

    + Use and operate equipment used for surveying, radios, computers, printers, calculators, scanners, digital cameras, and compressor jack hammers

    + Operate a motor vehicle

    + Hike over a variety of terrain while carrying survey equipment

    + Stand, climb, bend, squat, kneel, or twist while performing survey tasks

    + Communicate clearly and effectively with other crew members and the public

    + Read and interpret plans, maps, plats, charts, graphs, and reports

    WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    Work is normally performed in an outdoor environment with exposure to some physical risk and moderate physical effort. Must be able to push, pull, or lift up to 100 lbs on a regular basis.

     

    Must withstand intermittent exposure to noise, heat, cold, dampness, dust, fumes, traffic hazards, and inclement weather.

    IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING THIS POSITION

    This position is subject to being called to work prior to or after the scheduled shift in response to emergency situations.
