    Department Details

     

    Sanford Clinic Orthopedics & Sports Medicine is seeking a BE/BC Podiatrist to add to the group.

     

    * Join a premier group practice with 22 regionally recognized orthopedic surgeons, 3 podiatrists, and 6 non-operative physicians .

    * Ideal candidate would have interest in performing routine podiatric care, care of the mid-foot and forward, routine nail care, diabetic foot care, wound care, and limb salvage

    * Call is 1:4, rotates within the group

    * Provide outreach to surrounding communities

    * Coordinate care between Orthopedic and Vascular service lines

    * Orthopedic facility is state-of-the art and houses orthopedics, rehabilitation, physiatry, neurosciences, podiatry physicians, as well as various therapeutic specialties and durable medical equipment

    * New Orthopedic Hospital to open in 2025. The 8-story, 205,000 sq foot Orthopedic Hospital will include 12 ORs, 19 in-patient rooms and 56 medical suites

    Job Summary

    A doctor of podiatric medicine (DPM) is a licensed independent practitioner that prevents, diagnoses, and treats disorders, diseases, and injuries of the foot and ankle. Podiatrist are responsible for the podiatric history and podiatric examination, as well as all appropriate elements of the patient’s records. For any patient who meet the classifications of ASA 1 (normal, healthy patients) or ASA 2 (patients with mild systemic disease with no functional limitations), podiatrist may perform a complete admission history and physical examination and assess the medical risks of the procedure on the patient if they are deemed qualified to do so by the Credentials Committee and Executive Committee. They must nevertheless have a relationship with a physician on the Medical Staff who holds clinical privileges in the Medical Facility (established and declared in advance) who is available to respond should any medical issue arise with a patient.

     

    For any patient who meets ASA 3 or ASA 4 classifications, a medical history and physical examination of the patient shall be made and recorded by a physician who is a Medical Staff Member, and holds clinical privileges appropriate to the needs of the patient, before podiatric surgery shall be performed. In addition, a designated physician shall be responsible for the medical care of the patient throughout the period of hospitalization.

     

    Physicians trained in Podiatry programs may have variable levels of expertise in a variety of different areas, depending on the focus of their particular training experience.

     

    Core Privileges in Podiatry (type 1): Provide consultation when requested by a physician is on the medical staff at the facility, evaluate, diagnose, order diagnostic studies, and treat the foot by mechanical, medical, or superficial surgical means on patient of all ages.

     

    Core Privileges in Podiatry (type 2): In addition to level 1, Podiatrist may admit patients without significant underlying health problems, perform a complete history and physical for ASA 1 and ASA 2, and assess the medical risks of the procedure. Patients with significant underlying health conditions require a history and physical be performed by a MD, or DO. Podiatrist may evaluate, discharge and treat patients of all ages with podiatric problems and/or conditions of the forefoot, midfoot, and non-reconstructive hindfoot.

     

    Core Privileges in Podiatry (type 3): In addition to level 1-2 core privileges, includes the treatment of the forefoot, midfoot, rearfoot, reconstructive, and related structures by medical or surgical means.

     

    Core Privileges in Podiatry (type 4): In addition to level 1-3 core privileges, includes the ability involving osteotomies, arthrodesis, and open repair of fractures of the lower leg. Privileges include the ability to assess, stabilize, and determine disposition of patients with emergent conditions consistent with medical staff policy regarding emergency and consultative services.

    Qualifications

    DPM degree.

     

    Experience: Applicant must be able to demonstrate that they have successfully performed at least 50 podiatric procedures in the past 12 months. Documentation must contain procedures that pertain to the podiatric level of privileges that applicant is seeking. For example: If applicant is seeking level 1-3 privileges then the documentation submitted must have a representation of procedures for all three levels.

     

    References: A letter of reference must come from the director of the applicant’s podiatric program, if applicant is applying directly out of residency, or, a letter of reference may come from the head of the surgery department, chief of service, or the chief medical officer at the institution where the applicant most recently practiced.

     

    To be eligible to apply for privileges in podiatry (type 1), the applicant must demonstrate successful completion of a podiatric surgical residency accredited by the CPME, no board certification is required.

    OR

    To be eligible to apply for privileges in podiatry (type 2), the applicant must demonstrate successful completion of at least a 24-month podiatric surgical residency accredited by the CPME and current board certification or active participation in the examination process leading to board certification in foot surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery (within 7 years of completing formal training) or the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

    OR

    To be eligible to apply for privileges in podiatry type (3 or 4), the applicant must demonstrate successful completion of a 36-month podiatric surgical residency accredited by the CPME and current board certification or active participation in the examination process leading to board certification in foot surgery (within 7 years of completing formal training) and RRA surgery by the American Board of Foot and Ankle Surgery or the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

     

    Any individual who does not satisfy the board certification criterion may request that the appropriate governing Board waive it. The individual requesting the waiver bears the burden of demonstrating that his or her qualifications are equivalent to, or exceed, the criterion in question.
