The Department of Bioengineering has an outstanding opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 2 to join their team.

We are an interdisciplinary group of bioengineers, clinicians, mechanical and electrical engineers and software specialists. The research is focused on development and implementation of novel measurement techniques for external prosthetics and orthotics. The goal of the projects are to create instruments to help practitioners better understand patient needs, behaviors and issues and select treatments to improve their function and quality of life.
This is an engineering position with an emphasis on mechanical testing, data acquisition and controls. The position relies on a strong mechanical background and an understanding of software development processes, and requires good organizational ability. The engineer needs to effectively collaborate with lab personnel and be detail oriented in design, development, and testing. The position applies knowledge of practical design and related skills to implement devices that help test hypotheses and draw conclusions from collected data. Designs may lead to commercial medical products. The person in this position will work with the PI, faculty, staff, research associates, and students.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Software Development (30%)
+ Produce Code utilizing standard code packages (MATLAB, Python, C, etc.) to analyze and organize data collected from testing, determine trends and extract useful information.
+ Apply understanding of programming for microcontrollers utilizing C/C++ and communicate with other researchers on this process.
+ Apply understanding of data analysis findings to develop and communicate implementation strategies to firmware engineer.Scientific Studies (30%)
+ Work with the research group to develop human subjects testing protocols.
+ Conduct scientific studies with human participants while keeping extreme attention to detail. Perform data collections and characterize technologies effectiveness.
+ Manage and document the findings and data collected during studies for easy analysis and presentation of results clear to both engineering and clinical team members.Calibration and Testing (20%)
+ Design, conduct, and develop engineering bench tests to evaluate and calibrate our novel systems.
+ Present performance results and calibration results from bench testing.Mechanical Device Design and Prototyping (10%)
+ Work with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers and clinicians to develop sensing systems and prosthetic devices that meet project objectives.
+ Be able to interpret results from testing and provide/receive adequate feedback on results.Other Duties (10%)
+ Work within the group to push forward your and your fellow engineers projects while being communicative and collaborative.
+ Manage inventory and purchasing of electronic and mechanical components.
+ Support laboratory functions in fast paced environment through auxiliary tasks as needed. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering or a related science or engineering discipline and two years job-related experience in a research or industry setting, OR equivalent combination of education/experience. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Demonstrated proficiency in writing and reading code for the purposes of data analysis.
+ Experience in testing and analyzing mechanical systems.
+ Demonstrated ability to execute a complex project with high attention to detail.
+ Ability to work with diverse population of disabled participants (e.g., prosthesis users, orthosis users, people with an injury) running scientific studies.
+ Experience conducting biomechanical projects and studies.
+ Experience with prosthetics/lower limb disability or gait studies.
+ Capability to write manuscript-quality description of analysis methods and results.
+ MATLAB coding experience. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Ability to independently prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines; and to seek help when needed.
+ Willingness and ability to learn new systems and to implement new processes in response to changes.
+ Capability to work well with a team of interdisciplinary engineers and practitioners.
