Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) – Cardiovascular
Advance excellence in cardiovascular and critical care nursing through expert clinical education, evidence-based practice support, and policy development. The role provides specialized guidance to nursing staff in the CICU, step-down cardiac units, and cath lab, supporting care for patients with complex cardiac conditions and advanced cardiac devices. In collaboration with inter-professional teams, the position ensures the integration of best practices, regulatory standards, and continuous quality improvement in nursing education, policy, and clinical outcomes.
Identifies gaps in nursing practice through analysis and evaluation, and partners with staff and leadership to develop and implement action plans.
Facilitates training and supports care delivery for patients requiring advanced cardiac devices, including intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), ventricular assist devices (VADs), and pacemakers. Coordinates a collaborative approach to address the dynamic and urgent needs of the cardiovascular device program, including just-in-time education and reference materials.
Provides ongoing support for critical care practices in the CICU and actively responds to the professional development needs of nursing staff.
Reviews safety events and monitors nursing quality metrics to inform educational initiatives and practice improvements.
Develops, updates, and maintains evidence-based nursing policies and protocols. Promotes adherence to clinical standards and evaluates outcomes for continuous quality improvement.
Integrates organizational standards, current research, quality initiatives, and relevant literature into policy and procedure development.
Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements related to education, staff competencies, and equipment safety.
Requirements:
Current WA State RN license.
BSN degree.
5 years of critical care clinical experience.
3 years of cardiac device experience.
2 years of clinical leadership experience required (educator, CNS, manager/assistant nurse manager, charge RN, preceptor, QI lead).
Demonstrated ability to analyze practice issues and implement solutions/improvements.
Demonstrated ability to develop, teach, and evaluate educational offerings
Demonstrated ability to work within inter-professional teams
Customer service focus.
Project management experience.
Flexibility in meeting workload demands, some evening/night and weekend rotation.
Desired:
Master’s in Nursing or Doctorate in Nursing Practice.
Certification in specialty area.
Previous experience in professional development and nursing education.
A higher degree of healthcare.
