    Budget Title: Assistant Dean (SL-5)

     

    Salary: $80,000 or higher, commensurate with experience

     

    Thomas J. Watson College of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University seeks an Assistant Dean for Research. This position will report to the Associate Dean for Research, Corporate Engagement, and Entrepreneurship (RCEE) of the Watson College.

     

    This position does not come with a faculty appointment and is a fully administrative position. Primary responsibilities include assisting the Dean and the Associate Dean in the following areas:

     

    + Growing and nurturing RCEE programs and initiatives in Watson College and with external academic, industry, and nonprofit partners.

    + Supporting all operational aspects of research administration in the Watson College, including review and approval of grant proposals, contracts, startup funds, research travel funds, cost-sharing, visiting scholars, and postdocs.

    + Regular data collection and analysis of sponsored research activity, invention disclosures, patents, research assistants, research space usage, collaborations, and related data, for analysis, benchmarking, institutional ranking surveys, and other use cases.

    + Assisting faculty in the development of grant proposals, including support documents, cost-sharing, budgeting, partnerships, and planning.

    + Coordinating with industry partners on various initiatives, including research, funding, entrepreneurship, agreements, fellowships, etc.

    + Assisting senior administrators in planning, allocation, and management of Watson College research space and facilities.

    + Administration and review of various seed grant programs and proposals.

    + Research advocacy via compilation and dissemination of Watson faculty research profiles, white papers, research briefs, presentations, and other materials in coordination with the communications and marketing staff.

    + Planning and organizing research-related events including faculty orientation, research seminars, research retreats, research recognition luncheon, faculty and staff luncheon, research conferences, commencement, etc.

    + Faculty and staff hiring activities, including position development, advertising, serving on/chairing search committees, candidate visit logistics, offer negotiations, etc.

    + Planning, administration, and reconciliation of Watson College research budget.

    + Collaborating on the above activities with university colleagues in the Watson College Dean's Office, Schools, Departments, the Research Foundation, the University President's Office, the Provost's Office, Communication and Marketing Office, and other academic units.

    Job Requirements:

    + Bachelor's degree in an engineering, science, mathematics, economics, or other quantitative discipline with 5 or more years of relevant work experience in a U.S-based setting OR Graduate degree in one of the above fields and 2 or more years of relevant work experience in a U.S-based setting

    + Experience with collection, research, and analysis of data

    + Proficiency with business management tools such as spreadsheets, word processing, presentation tools, and databases, and ability to learn new tools as needed

    + Ability to multitask on several projects with competing and changing priorities and deadlines

    + Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal skills

    + Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment

    Preferred:

    + Graduate degree in an engineering, science, mathematics, economics, or other quantitative discipline with 3 or more years of relevant work experience in a U.S-based setting

    + Research administration or closely-related work experience in a higher education institution in a U.S-based setting

    + Knowledge of various funding sources and mechanisms, including government, corporate, and nonprofit

    + Understanding of technical research and scholarship across the engineering, computing, and applied science disciplines

    + Flexibility to travel and work during weekends and evenings, when needed
