Spectrum Healthcare Partners is Maine’s largest multi-specialty, physician-owned and directed professional organization and is comprised of over 200 physicians practicing in the areas of anesthesiology, orthopaedics, pain management, pathology, radiation oncology, radiology, and vascular & interventional services. Spectrum provides services at many of Maine’s hospitals throughout the state and in eastern New Hampshire.
POSITION SUMMARY
Position provides high-level clinical support to the Anesthesiologists by delivering oversight and daily management for pre-anesthesia evaluations and pain management services including acute traumatic and post-operative pain with both medical and procedural modalities . Provides customized clinical services for all patients undergoing anesthesia care and pain management services. Assists Anesthesiologists by conducting interviews to obtain and perform medical histories and physical examinations on patients schedule to receive anesthesia for a medical surgical or diagnostic procedure. Assists anesthesiologists in facilitating regional block anesthesia care.
This position is 30 hours per week, 3 days per week, three 10-hour days (Monday, Tuesday, and Friday).
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – Pre- Anesthesia Evaluations
+ Obtains complete medical, anesthesia and medication history for patients through an interview process.
+ Develops relationships with surgeon’s offices that will aid in the development of protocols for the rapid and efficient transfer of information relevant to the patient’s anesthesia care
+ Collates and reviews medical records of patients; obtains additional medical information as may be required.
+ Prepares and organizes a clinical pre-anesthesia history and physical record prior to anesthetic event.
+ Based on initial pre-anesthesia assessment, makes necessary recommendations for proper anesthesia care for an anesthesiologist who may suggest additional diagnostic studies.
+ Provides patient education, reviews test results, and assists patient with procedural understanding for proper anesthetic experience.
+ Makes recommendations to the anesthesiologist that helps to identify other diagnostic tests, as well as refers patients for specialist consultation and other therapeutic and diagnostic services, when necessary.
+ Documents anesthesia and medication history legibly, neatly, and accurately for the anesthesia record. This includes other anesthesia data summary forms to support proper patient care.
+ Make use of various electronic platforms / electronic medical records in accordance with facility policies on compliance and privacy.
+ Interacts with patient primary care physician, attending surgeon as well as secretarial and nursing staff employed by the hospital.
+ Helps to identify high-risk patients for an anesthesiologist interview prior to clinical procedures.
+ Manages stable chronic disease in the scope of APPI expertise and refer patients with illness beyond the scope of expertise to the appropriate specialty or sub-specialty.
+ Orders appropriate laboratory and diagnostic procedures.
+ Administers medications and injections within scope of expertise.
+ Maintains and reviews patient’s records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts test and examination results.
+ Uses Universal Precautions including personal protective equipment for anticipated contact with blood or other potentially infectious materials.
+ Maintains appropriate level of Company & facility HIPAA-related confidentiality
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS – Pain Management Services
+ Provides clinical assistance and pre-administrative testing with all Block patient service: patient scheduling, pre-op & transport services, clinical prep (IV startup), IV sedation & monitoring,
+ Reviews medical records of patients; obtains additional medical information as needed.
+ Obtains and prepares appropriate anesthetic and sedation medication with oversight from medically directing Anesthesiologist.
+ Prepares nerve stimulator and ultrasound machines.
+ Oversees daily block patient scheduling and ensures designated block area is properly equipped for delivery of service.
+ Coordinates patient flow and procedural activities with residents, clinical support staff, and sub-specialty anesthesiologists.
+ Development and oversight for outpatient perineural catheter programs.
+ Oversight and coordination of activities with the APMS service.
+ Provides patient and program education to appropriate support staff (RN’s, CRNA’s Residents, Anesthesiologists, interested internal hospital staff.
+ Provides support for various related research projects and may assist staff with various publications.
+ Legibly, neatly, and accurately completes reports as well as other anesthesia data forms in support of proper patient care, billing, quality improvement and compliance initiatives.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Maintains competency by reading professional literature, participating in continuing education, and maintaining professional affiliations.
+ Attends required hospital staff and anesthesiology-related meetings and may participate in various clinical committees as required.
+ Administers special clinical-related projects or other duties as assigned by the PAU Physician Liaison or anesthesiologist.
+ If necessary, notifies state authorities of any required reporting of potential domestic or child abuse situations.
+ Maintains compliance with regulatory agencies and accrediting bodies both regionally and nationally.
+ Maintains communication with physicians and staff regarding patient care.
+ Demonstrates professionalism at all times
+ Performs other duties necessary to maintain the overall efficiency and continuity of the division
+ Keeps abreast of current issues involving patient care or practice issues by attending and participating in department, team and practice meetings
+ Displays cooperative behavior and interacts positively and effectively with others to promote a team environment
+ Is proactive in identifying, reporting and participating in the resolution of any potential or actual patient safety issues
QUALIFICATIONS
+ Graduate of an accredited school with a degree as a Physician Assistant or a Nurse Practitioner
+ Current license issued by State of Maine or eligible for licensure
+ 2+ years’ experience in a surgical, PAU or other specialized clinical setting
+ Current DEA license
+ Current Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Certification
+ Skilled in taking medical history, assessing medical condition and interpreting findings.
+ Highly organized, personable and familiar with the process of preparing patients for surgery.
+ Excellent communication and interpersonal skill with the ability to develop and maintain a productive working relationship with hospital staff and anesthesiology physicians.
+ Knowledge of the professional medical practice and appropriate nursing care to deliver and evaluate patient care.
+ Skills in preparing and maintaining records, writing reports, and responding to appropriate patient/physician correspondence.
+ Proven communication skills.
+ Skills in developing and maintaining department quality assurance
+ Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, multi-tasking environment.
+ Proficient computer skills.
+ Ability to maintain confidentiality.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
+ Operation of various office equipment: fax machine, telephone and voice mail system, personal computer, e-mail system, cell phone, pager, and photocopier
+ Exposure to blood borne pathogens, anesthetic-related agents and medications, communicable diseases, toxic substances, ionizing radiation, may occur. Use of appropriate measures is required for safety controls and techniques
+ Operation of therapeutic and diagnostic medical equipment, administering therapeutic modalities
+ May be required to sit or stand for long periods of time
+ Frequent walking
+ Occasional bending, reaching, twisting
+ Lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally
