The Hardware Test Engineer works with automated packaging, sortation, and labeling platforms to enable faster and more efficient delivery to Amazon's customers.
The primary role of the Hardware Test Engineer is to provide technical testing support within packaging, sortation, and labeling automation systems. Working with the Mechanical, Electrical and Controls teams, the Hardware Test Engineer will design and execute testing on Amazon's in-house packaging machinery and automation. The test results will inform the design evolution and continuous improvement. This ensures that Amazon’s packaging, sortation, and labeling automation is simple, effective and delivers lower total cost while enabling more sustainable packaging, streamlined supply chains and lower total cost of ownership.
Key job responsibilities
- Collaborate with cross-functional engineers to design and execute packaging machinery and automation projects
- Design and conduct rigorous product testing in Amazon's labs or in the field at Operational sites
- Provide test result reports to stakeholders
- Design and implement prototype machine improvements using Mechatronic principles
- Support the development of subsystem requirements
About the team
Aligning mechatronics and packaging into one organization, (Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging, MSP) enables Amazon to develop, deploy and scale automated solutions across the Amazon Fulfillment Network, especially from Pick to SLAM for the Automated Robotics Sortable (ARS) network. This group works backwards from deep customer insights to deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into brownfield and greenfield deployments with safety as a top priority. In addition, Sustainable Packaging solutions are a thread that impacts and connects all parts of the Amazon Stores supply chain and customer experience. They take ownership for the entire packaging experience including selling partner design, first/middle/last mile and total customer experience. They eliminate waste and packaging wherever possible. Where Amazon added packaging is required, they are transitioning from single-use plastics to curbside recyclable paper-based materials.
Basic Qualifications
- BS degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics
- 4+ years of working in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics disciplines
- Experience with prototyping and implementation
- Validation and verification hardware testing experience
- Experience working with new technology and product development
- Experience working in testing lab environments as well as at Operational sites in the field.

Preferred Qualifications
- Masters degree in Mechanical, Electrical Engineering or Mechatronics
- Understanding of safety systems
- An understanding of rapid prototyping options and Agile Development
- Experience with Electro-Mechanical, automation, and robotic systems
- Design experience of fixtures, parts, assemblies, and testing jigs
- Experience in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred)
- Experience creating test plans derived from functional design requirements
- Experience with Minitab, R or other statistical packages and methods
- Basic coding/scripting capabilities, such as automating numerical collection and analysis
- Experience designing and planning test conditions, test scripting, and analyzing test data sets to ensure appropriate and adequate coverage and control.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
