Job Description:
Incumbent is responsible for developing, executing, and implementing a full range of internal and external public relations and engagement activities for the Department of Public Utilities' four enterprise funds including Water, Sewer, Stormwater, and Streetlighting. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: producing and managing social media; coordinating special events, community outreach, and communications with media outlets; originating materials for media response and publications; and, facilitating and promoting internal/external communications with project stakeholders.
This job classification covers mid-level management positions which are part of and report to a higher level manager or director of a department public relations and/or communications work unit.
About the Position : At Salt Lake City Department of public utilities, our engagement is a multifaceted process that involves the public in decisions and activities that impact their lives. We strive to create opportunities for citizens to participate in discussions, provide input, and influence decisions related to public utilities issues and projects. The incumbent will be joining a team made up of the Communications and Engagement Manager and outside public engagement consultants.
About the Team: Established in 1876, Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities is the oldest retail water provider in the West. We are committed to serving our customers and protecting our environment by delivering high-quality drinking water, managing flood control and storm water, collecting and treating wastewater to standards that exceed EPA regulations, and maintaining and enhancing public street lighting. We actively protect our source waters in the Wasatch canyons watershed and promote conservation through efficient water use.
Position Salary Range:
+ $87,000 - $108,493
This position is eligible for full city benefits, including:

Key Responsibilities:
+ Facilitates public engagement related to new and ongoing department capital projects.
+ Manages department social media online presence and communications.
+ Manages and directs the Department Public Engagement contractors/consultants.
+ Curates internal and external outreach media and materials.
+ Coordinates with department administration for outreach priorities (capital, initiatives, other).
+ Participates in community programs such as water-week, community fair, engage with community councils.
+ Tracks media coverage and issues related to city and department.
+ Prepares and responds to media and constituent inquiries.
+ Participates in department and city programs such as employee engagement, safety programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
+ Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor's degree in public relations, communications, marketing, journalism, or related fields plus three to four years of experience in communications, marketing, public relations, and/or related fields.
+ Proficient in use of computers and modern software applications,
+ Strong skills in writing, editing, complemented by effective verbal communication skills.
+ Demonstrated ability to follow instructions, multi-task, meet deadlines and perform duties in a high-pressure, high-demand work environment.
+ Demonstrated proficiency in design, graphic, and web publishing and related tools. Ability to effectively manage social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube and government platforms.
+ Ability to potentially work non-traditional hours.
+ Ability to travel independently from one location to another as assignments require.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
+ Generally comfortable working conditions, however, will be expected to operate in or near and emergency scene.
+ Exposure to stressful situations as a result of human behavior, time-constraints, and or multiple demands and priorities.
+ May be required to work non-traditional hours.
