    Assistant Men’s & Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field Coach

    Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

    Bachelor’s degree (foreign equivalent or higher). Three (3) years of coaching and/or playing experience at the college level in the sport of Cross Country/Track & Field. In lieu of college level coaching experience, a combination of four (4) years of coaching experience at the high school, college, professional or national team level and playing experience at the college, professional or national team level in the sport of Cross Country/Track & Field may be considered. Understanding of NCAA Compliance Rules (played a Division I, II or III sport, coached in collegiate athletics or as a staff member in a collegiate athletic program).

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Prior experience with recruiting. Experience with Cross Country. Experience in administrative responsibilities in the sport of Cross Country/Track & Field (e.g. team scheduling, budget preparation & administration, facility usage, public relations, fundraising, community service and other daily operations for the program).

    Brief Description of Duties:

    This position is ​for an NCAA Division 1 Assistant ​Coach​ in the sport of Men’s & Women’s Cross Country/Track & Field​. The primary focus of this position will be on recruiting, acting as a director of operations, with coaching responsibilities as assigned by the Head Coach. Preference will be given to those with coaching or competition experience in the middle-distance events. The incumbent will be required to use independent judgement in the identification & recruitment of prospective student athletes. The assistant will be required to assist the head coach in all aspects of operating a successful program and be capable of carrying out coaching duties as assigned by the head Coach.

    Recruiting:

    + Use independent discretion and judgment in identifying student-athletes capable of competing both academically and athletically at Stony Brook University. They will play a role in the subsequent active recruitment of those identified student athletes and in conjunction with the head coach award athletics scholarships. Responsible for identifying prospective student-athletes by independently evaluating talent at local & national events and initiating correspondence and maintaining relationships with coaches and prospects. Manage a database of prospects and maintain records of contacts, to remain in compliance with NCAA, Conference and University regulations. Must propose, manage and adhere to a recruiting budget for each of the events attended.

    Student-Athlete Skill Instruction/Team and Competition Preparation:

    + In conjunction with the Head Coach, contribute to the development of a daily training program and race day strategies.

    Monitoring of Academic Progress of Student-Athletes:

    + Working in conjunction with the office of Student-Athlete Development, will oversee the academic success of the student-athlete and assist with academic problems. This includes, providing guidance/counseling and support (as necessary) as well as supervising and monitoring study halls (as assigned), checking class attendance, and organizing weekly and monthly (one on one) academic meetings with each student-athlete to track their progress by semester, by major, and by degree requirements.

    Administrative Responsibilities:

    + Responsible for the organization and coordination of a wide variety of administrative tasks as assigned by the head coach, which include, but not limited to, team travel, contest scheduling, budget preparation & administration, facility usage, public relations, marketing, fundraising, community service and other daily operations for the program. Required to work independently with various support services in the Department of Athletics and campus constituents (i.e. Financial Aid, Admissions, & Registrar) in carrying out these tasks.

    NCAA Rules Compliance:

    + Knowledge of, and adherence to, NCAA rules and regulations pertaining to recruiting, eligibility, and general operation of the Men’s & Women’s Track & Field program. To be eligible to recruit off-campus, the assistant coach must pass the NCAA Recruiting Exam on an annual basis.

    * Failure to comply with NCAA regulations can result in suspension w/out pay, termination, fines, institutional loss of scholarship and bans on post-season competition.

     

    Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

    Special Notes:

    This is a full-time appointment. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.

     

    In addition to the employee's base salary, this position is eligible for $3,400 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly.

     

    Evening and weekend work will be required at times.
