    About our opportunity:

    Begin your career in public service with the City of Asheville's Public Works Department! The City of Asheville is currently looking to hire a full-time CCTV Camera Operator Assistant with in the Public Works Department in the Stormwater Services Division. The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled work in the operation of a variety of heavy motorized equipment.to operate closed circuit televising technology and equipment to inspect stormwater system infrastructure to identify needed repairs and make recommendations regarding system maintenance, repair, and construction needs.

    What you'll be doing:

    + Assists in the operation of robotic closed circuit televising technology (CCTV) and equipment and related computers and software: utilizes robotic CCTV system to inspect stormwater system infrastructure; records inspection footage; evaluates health and functionality of infrastructure; identifies needed repairs and maintenance; and prepares inspection reports based upon inspection results.

    + Maintains robotic camera system and equipment: reads and interprets complex mechanical and electrical diagrams of robotic camera system; repairs, replaces, cleans, and lubricates critical camera parts; performs electrical soldering and connecting of wires based on wiring diagrams; changes camera light bulbs, drive motors, tires, wheels, lift and lenses; fuels vehicle and generator; and troubleshoots and resolves camera operation issues.

    + Operates and maintains other equipment, tools, and supplies in support of department operations, such as camera truck and trailer, dump trucks, vac-con trucks, wheeled loader, forklifts, skid steer, excavator, backhoe, knuckle boom truck, snowplows, salt spreaders, shovels, rakes, hand tools, power tools, pumps, compressors, hoses, saws, drills, and blowers.

    + Adheres to established safety procedures: monitors work environment and use of safety equipment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; flags and directs traffic and places markers, signs and cones around project or work site to ensure safety of crew and the traveling public; and wears protective gear.

    + Performs general cleaning and maintenance tasks necessary to keep equipment and tools in operable condition: inspects equipment; checks fluid levels; replaces fluid; greases equipment; fuels vehicles, replaces parts; washes and cleans equipment; cleans shop and work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.

    + Communicates with supervisor, other City employees, contractors, the public, outside agencies and organizations, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.

    + Processes a variety of documentation associated with department/division operations, within designated timeframes and per established procedures: receives, reviews, prepares, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate various forms, reports, correspondence, electrical diagrams, maps, drainage plans, leave requests, vehicle and equipment maintenance logs, inspection reports, and other documentation; compiles data for further processing or for use in preparation of department reports; and maintains computerized and/or hardcopy records.

    + Operates a personal computer to enter, retrieve, review, or modify data, utilizing word processing, spreadsheet, database, Internet, e-mail, or other software; and operates general office or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions.

    Benefits:

    About you:

    We know your time is valuable. Applicants who meet the following minimum requirements or have comparable experience and/or education will be considered:

     

    High school diploma or GED required; supplemented by one year of experience in sewer construction, maintenance, or inspection; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

     

    Specific License or Certification Required: Must obtain and maintain a valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), including appropriate endorsement(s), within 6 months of hire. Most possess or acquire, and maintain the following additional certifications or licensures: Confined Space Entry, Flagging, and Work Zone Safety.

    Selected candidates will have the opportunity to obtain their CDL license on the job and paid for by the City of Asheville.     Work Schedule: Full Time 40 hrs. Week; Monday -Thursday 7:00 AM - 5:30 PM (with the possibility of nights and weekend work)

    Work Environment:

    + Employee lifts/carries approximately 75 lbs. frequently. Very heavy physical activity required, performing strenuous daily activities. Prolonged standing, over the head reaching and lifting, climbing, carrying weight for long distances, squatting, kneeling and crawling. Periodic shoveling requiring lifting from ground to waist to shoulder.

    + Work exposes the employee to the usual hazards and working conditions associated with heavy equipment operation. Duties assigned to employees in this class may vary according to the needs the department assigned and/or allocation of equipment and workload. Work is performed under general supervision of a Labor Crew Leader, and is evaluated in terms of the care exercised in the operation of equipment and the completeness with which instructions are followed.
