    The Charles and Virginia Hickman Hospital will give our community its first-ever wellness destination. Our families and friends will have improved access to nutrition education, exercise resources and state-of-the-art care like they never have before.     The role of the phlebotomist is one that deals with personal interaction and communication. No two patients are alike so every day is different! Drawing blood is an essential part of the medical diagnosis and requires coordination, organization, and multitasking.     Position Summary:

    The Phlebotomist collects products or specimens for basic procedures, such as: analytical testing of glucose, perform procedures, such as: bleeding times, sweat chlorides, D-Xylose tolerance and point-of-care testing using proper techniques and performs and documents quality control procedures utilizing laboratory computer information system. They follow strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis & assist in the care of the patient prior to, during and after specimen collection. The phlebotomist determines, from like samples, combinations of tests and the associated acceptable minimum volumes. They are knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables, which may affect specimen analysis and are familiar with test synonyms and abbreviations, and cross-referencing tests to specimen types.

    ACCOUNTABILITIES

    *All duties listed below are essential unless noted otherwise*

    1. Collects products or specimens for the basic procedures and performs point-of-care testing using proper techniques.

    2. Follows strict principles of asepsis and antisepsis. Assists in the care of the patient prior to, during and after specimen collection.

    3. Determines, from like samples, combinations of tests and the associated acceptable minimum volumes. Knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables, which may affect specimen analysis. Familiar with test synonyms and abbreviations, and cross-referencing tests to specimen types.

    4. Performs all pre-analytic tasks associated with sample preparation including, but not limited to, centrifugation, decanting, specimen distribution, and specimen packaging.

    5. Utilizes laboratory computer information system to include all work aides and shortcuts within the system. Utilizes quality assurance data to enhance the services rendered by the section. Recommends changes in procedures to address quality issues and provide customer satisfaction.

    6. Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Complies with requirements of accreditation and regulatory agencies by attending mandatory in-services and continuing laboratory education and participating in continuous quality improvement. Maintains and upgrades personal professional development.

    7. Determines, from like samples, combinations of tests and the associated acceptable minimum volumes. Knowledgeable of pre-analytic variables, which may affect specimen analysis. Familiar with test synonyms and abbreviations, and cross-referencing tests to specimen types.

    8. Maintains appropriate par levels and organizes supplies and equipment in work areas as assigned. Notifies appropriate associate when re-order levels are reached, and equipment needs to be repaired.

    9. Assists in the training new associates or students.

    10. Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

    Education: Must be in High School or pursuing a High School Diploma, or equivalent. Completion of a formal phlebotomy training program or documented phlebotomy experience (Ex. venipunctures, experience with effective puncture techniques, blood draws).

     

    Skills: Must be able to understand directions and be able to communicate and respond to inquiries. Requires effective interpersonal skills. Must be able to input and retrieve information from computer.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Personal Protective Equipment: May require lab coat, gloves, gown, and mask as required.

     

    Physical Demands: Must be able to read and speak the English language. Must be able to see, hear, and move intermittently, or use prosthetics that will enable you to function adequately to assure that the requirements of this position can be fully met. Frequent prolonged standing. Must be able to continuously move about department and between workstations. Must be able to move, lift or carry materials or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs., up to 10% of the time. Must be able to differentiate colors. Regularly exposed to infection/contagious disease. Possible exposure to bloodborne pathogens from blood and/or bodily fluids and disease bearing specimens.
