    Job Title Student Assistant - ASPIRE Mentor

    General Description

    This is a student position responsible for assisting in the operations and activities of a department or a departmental project, program, or function. This position is responsible for assisting Student Development and Access Services with the ASPIRE Mentoring Program and Summer Bridge Program to support first-year students in their transition to the university.

    Job Duties

    1. Mentors assigned students on a bi-weekly basis by providing personalized support and guidance in their first year of college.

    2. Participates in the ASPIRE Summer Bridge Program and assists with preparing a cohort of incoming students for their first year of college.

    3. Increases mentees’ campus connections through involvement in campus organizations and familiarizing them with campus resources.

    4. Assists students with their academic goals and social connections throughout their first year of college.

    5. Participates in required training necessary to execute their role in the program.

    6. Develops assigned program sessions in coordination with the director.

    7. Assists in mentee file and record maintenance.

    8. Performs other related duties as assigned.

    10. Ability to separate personal situations from the work environment.

    11. Ability to identify issues of concern to bring to the attention of the director.

    Required Qualifications

    The minimum education required for admittance as a student at Stephen F. Austin State University.

     

    No direct experience is required. Training and instruction will be provided.

     

    Must be an active student in good academic standing (cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher).

     

    Must be able to attend the ASPIRE Staff Retreat on August 16, 2025 and the ASPIRE Summer

     

    Bridge Program August 17-20, 2025.

     

    Must be able to work up to 10 hours per week during the fall and spring semester, plus work all mentoring sponsored events.

    Special Conditions for Eligibility

    A student must be enrolled in six or more semester hours to be eligible for student employment during the fall or spring semesters. To be eligible for student employment during the summer, a student must be enrolled in three or more semester hours or be registered for courses in the upcoming fall semester.

     

    Student assistants may not hold any other type of position such as a graduate assistantship or temporary casual employment at the same time that they are employed as a student assistant.
