    THE POSITION

    About Global Development (GD) and Business Growth Innovation & Advocacy (BGIA)

     

    Global Development is the backbone of drug development at JJIM. BGIA empowers the connectivity that fuels GD. BGIA unifies our GD strategy, drives portfolio insights enabling excellence in delivery, and paves the path for the future, while preparing our organization for dynamic external shifts. Reporting to the Head of BGIA, the Head of Innovative Health, Engagement and Advocacy is a significant role where credibility with senior stakeholders both internally and externally and an ability to influence and set vision/direction is critical to our business success. The role requires a dynamic and visionary leader to redefine the clinical trial experience through unleashing the potential of innovation, driving broader access to innovative medicines, and enriching the healthcare experience for all.

    The IHEA team drives meaningful outcomes for patients, sites, and the healthcare ecosystem through several capabilities that serve our Global Development Delivery Units (GD DU) and Global Clinical Operations (GCO) teams:

    + **Engagement:** Sets the strategy for end-to-end engagement across the JJIM portfolio, assuring that the needs of Health Authorities, sites, patients and caregivers are understood and adapted to.

    + **Advocacy:** Build strong partnerships with patient communities to foster trust, transparency, and collaboration. Provide tools and guidance to our GD functions to operationalize advocacy across clinical development, enhance recruitment and retention by aligning trial design with community needs, and elevate patient perspectives into strategic planning.

    + **Clinical Representation Excellence:** Ensure patients from all regions and backgrounds are considered and represented throughout drug development.

    + **Innovative Health:** Discover, develop, and launch impactful solutions that enhance patient and site experiences and optimize trial operations. Identify, test, and scale innovations, build cross-functional alignment, and advance patient-centered research.

    + **Business Process Optimization:** Drive process excellence through end-to-end redesign, simplification, and optimization. Lead the GD technology and non-drug business initiatives strategy, prioritization and program management.

    + **Advanced Insights & Solutions:** Deliver AI, analytics, automation, and design thinking to optimize feasibility processes and clinical trial strategies. Translate complex data into actionable insights, enhance enterprise agility, and drive a culture of experimentation and continuous learning

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Lead the development of a holistic innovative health and advocacy strategy on behalf of JJIM; assuring voice of the Health Authority, patient & site is built into the investment projects and planning to assure speed to drug development timelines.

    + Set the strategy for patient & site engagement across the JJIM portfolio. Develop and own the patient journey & site insights and systematically embed into asset/study planning to improve clinical trial projection, speed, and quality.

    + Develops dynamic methodologies for asset and trial feasibility and implement across the GD DU and GCO in a consistent manner.

    + Leads the development of GD’s AI strategy and collaborates across JJIM and GD to identify opportunities where data, analytics, or automation can transform our trial execution and productivity efforts.

    + Accountable to develop and maintain all standard operating procedures and trainings associated with new/fewer complex approaches, and new ways of doing business across JJIM.

    + Develop & lead the clinical trial patient representativeness strategy ensuring patients from all regions and backgrounds are considered and represented throughout drug development.

    + Orchestrate the strategy and delivery of GD investment projects (non-drug business initiatives (NDBI) and technology requirements of our workforce. Responsible for reporting, monitoring, and analyzing portfolio-level value delivery, including organizational readiness, business satisfaction, adoption, and activation of our NDBIs.

    + Partner with commercial patient strategy groups, legal, compliance and bioethics to differentiate J&J an JJIM in the external and internal communities, raising our profile and position.

    + The leader sits on the Global Development Board of Directors and will be accountable to many aspects of drug delivery leaders across JJIM and Medical Affairs (MA). This role will also be integral stakeholder to commercial patient strategies to build our understanding and potentially augment the drug development strategies to raise JNJ reputation and patient awareness within the internal and external communities.

    + People Leadership / Talent Strategy - Build a high performing team through on-going development, performance management and coaching. Take ownership to ensure a strong pipeline of leaders within the organization through the Succession Planning process, and foster employee engagement, inclusion and Credo Behaviors.

     

    It is expected that this role sits on external bodies with peer companies representing Global Development and JJIM (benchmarking, roundtables, etc). Critical business partners include Data Science and Digital Health, JNJ Technology, Commercial, MA, Legal, Bioethics, and Regulatory Policy. Key stakeholders include TA; GD Functions; Health Authorities; site/patient advocacy organizations and industry peer groups.

     

    Estimated size of the organization is ~90 employees and have impact over a budget of US $125MM in Operational budget and other expenses. It will drive any innovation across GD and oversee the GD NDBI and technology investments. Budget accountability will lie with this leader and could range to $70M.

     

    The role will support the entire JJIM and MA portfolio of ~500 trials, across more than 20,000 sites. If we follow industry trends, then the amount of money spent in site & patient engagement alone would be ~15% of the total portfolio spend. This equates to approx. $1.2B. While not directly accountable for this significant investment this role would define the strategy, prioritization and tactics JJIM would leverage to assure parity with industry peers, build from it and establish JJIM as partner of choice for patients, sites, caregivers and industry thought leaders around research and development.

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    + A minimum of 20 years with progressive leadership experience in the pharmaceutical industry. Specific experience in project management and clinical trial operations strongly preferred

    + Deep and proven experience in assessing external environment and leading changes in innovative technology, processes and tools to support expedited drug development

    + Deep experience of engagement and advocacy, proven representation in the external community of Health Authorities, site engagement, patient communities and with industry peers

    + Understanding of current systems and IT interconnectivity required

    + Previous project management leadership experience at an executive level

    + Successful track record of developing talent and leaders of leaders

    + Strong ability to make, impact and influence difficult decisions, proven experience in establishing and maintaining executive level relations; leveraging a broad base of tactics & excellent communication skills

    + Strong ability to develop, maintain and influence stakeholder relationships internally and externally with Executive Leadership (TA Leadership, Finance, GD Leaders, Business Development etc.)

    + Proven track record of collaboration across organizations to innovate, implement efficiencies and drive complex change

    + Experience in working in cross-functional teams and managing large projects – change management/leadership experience in driving complex and significant, transformation efforts

    + Trusted, inclusive leader with demonstrated experience in managing and mentoring cross functional, global teams is required

    + Sound financial acumen is required

    + Driving a Credo-based culture, including a diverse and inclusive environment

    + Proven track record of enterprise leadership and ability to build high performing teams. Creating a culture of collaboration, transparency and enterprise mindfulness. Establishing an outside in approach for both external and internal partnerships
