Job Summary
The Burbidge Athletics Academic Center, a department within Intercollegiate Athletics, is seeking a qualified Learning Specialist to work primarily with the sport of Football and oversee the Learning Services unit as Director. Under the general supervision and guidance of the Sr. Associate AD of Academic Services, this position specializes in working with identified student-athletes, including student-athletes with recognized learning disabilities, as well as lead the Learning Services unit. Candidates for the position will ensure that goals and objectives are met with strict adherence to University of Utah, BIG12 Conference, and NCAA rules and regulations. The Director of Learning Services will be charged with enhancing the academic success and retention of student-athletes at the University of Utah.
Responsibilities
+ The following are the major/essential functions and duties of the Director of Learning Services position:
+ Provide comprehensive leadership aligning with the University of Utah Athletic Department mission and vision;
+ Develop, coordinate and implement individualized academic support plans for identified student-athletes, including the assessment and evaluation of individual student-athletes to identify learning needs and additional academic support;
+ Conduct one-on-one academic meetings with assigned caseload of student-athletes emphasizing teaching and learning strategies while addressing academic concerns as needed;
+ Provide individualized instruction in areas requiring academic enhancement and development (i.e. reading comprehension, writing, study skills);
+ Collaborate with other Learning Specialists to implement assessment processes and grow Learning Support Services for all student-athletes;
+ Administer the incoming student-athlete questionnaire and review results for caseload placement;
+ Supervise direct reports in full-time and part-time staff roles;
+ Direct the Tutorial Program and Mentor Program Coordinators in support for assigned student-athletes;
+ Serves as a liaison to the Director of Psychology & Wellness and the Center for Disability & Access to identify student-athletes assisting in the process of obtaining psychoeducational testing/accommodations;
+ Review and assess educational documentation and testing, with the ability to create an individualized support plan
+ Work as an integral member of the leadership team in a progressive Athletics Academic Services office to provide industry leading and coordinated support services for all student-athletes;
+ Maintain student-athlete files and records while collecting necessary data and documenting interactions with student-athletes;
+ When required, to meet with prospects and parents during on-campus recruiting visits to discuss and review the philosophy of athletics academic support services;
+ Successfully engage with a wide range of constituents including student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff, administrators, faculty, and campus partners
+ Utilize a variety of programs to assist in daily job duties (i.e. TeamWorks-Retain, GradesFirst, Box, etc.)

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience), plus one year of directly related experience
Demonstrated ability to work independently, analyze and make decisions related to program content. Strong coordination and organizational skills required to prioritize conflicting deadlines. Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills are also required.

Preferences
Preference may be given to applicants with experience in Athletic Academic Support or a graduate degree in Counseling, Education, or a related field of study.
