    Summary

    This position requires performing skilled welding work in the fabrication and repair of metal articles and metal equipment in the automotive, construction, and general maintenance field. Performs skilled preventativemaintenance andrepairs onpetroleum/electric vehicles, trucks, boats, transitbuses, generators, construction/heavy equipment as well as emergency vehicles. Exercises initiative, decision-making, and independent judgment under the general direction of an Automotive Coordinator.

     

    Job Duties and Responsibilities

     

    The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification.

     

    Performscuttingandweldingonsuchitemsofmachineryandequipmentastruck,bus,autobodies, pump and engine parts, heavy construction equipment and similar machinery and apparatus.

     

    Fabrication of tanks for truck bodies, trailer, turntables, special truck bodies and similar equipment and apparatus.

     

    Performsblacksmithing,suchastheforgingoftoolsofvarioustypes,straightening,repairing,and reinforcing truck frames, bodies, and similar work.

     

    DesignsandfabricatesofawidevarietyofmetalpartsandapparatusforthevariousCitydepartments. Maintains and makes minor repairs to welding equipment.

     

    Inspects and tests vehicles, makes visual and operational inspections of vehicles to diagnose problems and repairs problems affecting a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and heavy equipment such as: automobiles, passenger buses, police and fire specialized equipment, Sewer Maintenance/ Vacuum Trucks (Vactor and Vac-Con), Compacting Garbage and Recycle trucks, Back Hoes, Water Tank Trucks, Commercial Grade Marine vessels and Vessel Trailer repairs, Heavy equipment trailers, Seaweed Collection Boat, Street Sweepers, Grapple Trucks, Bobcat and specialized attachments, water pumps, pressurecleaners,Tractorsetc.,Generaltrucks,publicworksconstructionandmaintenanceequipment,etc.

     

    Participatesinthewidestvarietyofautomotivemaintenanceandrepairsfromminorworktocomplete rebuilding, including minor welding and cutting.

     

    Troubleshoots, repairs/rebuilds and installs diesel and gasoline motors, grind valves, replaces main bearingsaswellastroubleshootsandrepairstransmissions,universaljoins,differentials,PTOunits,and Transfer cases.

     

    Diagnoses Hydraulic systems and, rebuilds/replaces hydraulic pumps, hoses, motors, controls, and cylinders.

     

    Troubleshoots, rebuilds/replaces automotive electrical components such as starters, generators, distributors, voltage regulators, etc.

    Perform front end and four wheel alignments

     

    The ability to diagnose Engine Control Module code failures using a scanner or laptop based software to read and interpret fault codes stored in vehicles computer system. Use data stream analysis to identify specific drive-ability issues related to engine's sensors, actuators, and overall functionality.Perform pinpoint test as directed by diagnostic test steps to locate and repair or replace component causing failure. Performtargetedtestsonsuspectedcomponentsbasedondiagnostictroublecodessuchas:checkingsensor voltage, resistance, or functionality of actuators.

     

    Perfomextensiveelectricaldiagnosis,reviewelectricaldiagramsandschematicsfortroubleshootingand repairing electrical problems

     

    Diagnose and repair Air conditioning systems

     

    ProvidesroadsideassistancetooperatorsofCityvehiclesandtowsvehiclestogarageas needed.

     

    Consultswithsupervisortodeterminecostsofrepairsandobtaintechnicalassistance. Performs scheduled maintenance on vehicles as assigned.

     

    Deliversvehiclestooutsidevendorsandretrievesvehicleswhenworkiscompleted.Interpretsandacts upon work orders.

     

    Prepares and updates maintenance records and signoff on work orders.

     

    Conformswithandabidesbyallregulations,policies,workproceduresandinstructions.Conformswithall safety rules which includes wearing and using all appropriate safety equipment.

     

    Performs other related tasks as required.

    Qualifications

    High School Diploma or equivalent.

     

    Minimum six (6) years of experience at the journeyman level in automotive and construction equipment welding,includingexperienceinawidevarietyofgasolineanddiesel-poweredpublicworksequipment.

     

    ASE certification preferred

     

    Valid Commercial Driver's License Class B.

     

    CDL requirement may be waived for up to 120 days but must be obtained by the end of the 120daysforcontinuedemploymentaslongasemployeehasavalidFloridaDriver'sLicense. Must furnish own tools and repair equipment.

     

    Ifcandidatedoesnotcurrentlypossess,theymustattain"certifiedweldercertification"andpass3GPlate testing in Gas Metal Arc Welding (MIG), Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (TIG), and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) within 6 months of employment.

     

    HOLIDAYS: 15 days including 3 floating days.

     

    SICK LEAVE: 96 hours annually.

     

    ANNUAL LEAVE: 80 hours in the first year of employment, increasing up to 188 hours after 25 years. Employees must take 40 hours of annual leave each year.

     

    BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: 5 or 10 work days for the death of a family member in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement and the City's Personnel Rules & Regulations.

     

    MEDICAL INSURANCE: Fully paid by the City (HMO Select). Coverage becomes effective 1st of month following 30 days. Employee may purchase coverage for eligible dependents at a cost of approximately 50% of the premium.

     

    DENTAL INSURANCE: Available to all employees through payroll deduction.

     

    LIFE INSURANCE : Term Life and Accidental Death and Dismemberment equal to 1 x annual salary, fully paid by the City (up to $200,000).

     

    VOLUNTARY BENEFITS: Several plans available, such as Short-Term Disability, Life Insurance and Critical Illness policies through payroll deductions.

     

    LEGAL SERVICES: Legal Service plan available at a cost to employees through payroll deductions.

     

    DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Employees are given the option to defer a portion of their pre-tax salary into the 457 Deferred Compensation Program.

     

    TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: $2000 per semester ($6,000 maximum annually) for approved college coursework.

     

    SAFETY GLASSES: Required safety glasses are provided every 2 years.

    RECREATIONAL USE: Employee, spouse and immediate family members seventeen (17) years of age and under are entitled to the benefits below:

    - Venetian Pool – No charge for daily admission.

     

    - Tennis Centers – No charge for daily court fees.

     

    - Youth Center – 50% off residential rates for memberships and 50% off camps and other programs.

    Golf at Biltmore & Granada:

    - Monday through Friday – no charge.

    - Saturday, Sunday and Holidays:

    - Before Noon – Twilight fees apply

     

    - After Noon – No charge

    PENSION: Mandatory employee contribution of 10% of salary. Vesting period is 10 years.

    OR

    As of 6/14/2016 - DEFINED CONTRIBUTION: 401(a) - Contribution by City of 7% of employee base annual salary. Vesting period 5 years. Employee not required to contribute.
