Description

We are looking for an experienced General Counsel to provide strategic legal leadership and oversight for a nonprofit organization during a pivotal period of transition. This long-term contract position is ideal for an attorney with a deep understanding of nonprofit governance, risk management, and international operations. The role offers an exciting opportunity to make a meaningful impact while collaborating with executive leadership and cross-functional teams.

Responsibilities:

• Direct and oversee a legal team consisting of entry-level attorneys, paralegals, and administrative staff to ensure smooth departmental operations.

• Provide expert legal advice on employment law, nonprofit governance, contracts, insurance matters, and international business activities.

• Partner with HR, finance, and senior leadership to address organizational legal needs and ensure compliance across all departments.

• Manage relationships with external counsel and coordinate specialized legal support as needed.

• Develop strategies for optimizing the use of in-house legal resources versus external counsel.

• Offer guidance on intellectual property matters, including international licensing and content clearance.

• Mitigate organizational risks through proactive legal strategies and compliance measures.

• Support the organization’s mission by fostering a values-driven and culturally sensitive legal approach.

• Ensure alignment of legal operations with the nonprofit’s long-term goals and international reach.

Requirements

• Juris Doctor (JD) degree with an active license to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction.

• A minimum of 10 years of legal experience, ideally including in-house counsel roles within nonprofit organizations.

• Proven ability to lead and manage legal teams, fostering collaboration and attention to detail.

• Comprehensive knowledge of contracts, employment law, nonprofit governance, and risk management.

• Experience working with mission-driven or international nonprofits, preferably with a spiritual or values-based focus.

• Strong cultural sensitivity and ability to build consensus in a non-confrontational manner.

• Excellent communication and organizational skills to manage complex legal operations.

The ideal General Counsel will be Southern California based and offer 40 hours/week of availability (M-F, standard business hours).
