    Salary Grade NC11 Salary Range $43,738.00 - $76,542.00

     

    The successful applicant will assist the Team Leader of a three (3) person underwater bridge inspection team in the safety inspection of all types of bridge structures. Assist Team Leader to meet all inspection and safety requirements of the department and OSHA standards for commercial diving. Overnight travel is required based on OSHA requirements and to assist other inspection teams in the state. Acceptable physical requirements determined by the employer and recommended by the examining physician must be met to perform in this position. Preference will be given to those applicants with bridge safety inspection and commercial diving experience. Advanced Scuba Diving Certification issued by a National Diver Certification Association and a minimum of 100 hours of verifiable underwater diving experience (e.g., log entries) are required. Work is performed in an assigned area & statewide. The primary base of operations for this position is in Raleigh, NC, although work will be required statewide.

     

    Duties include assisting the Team Leader in above water and underwater inspection of bridges, cofferdams, culverts, and pipes to detect evidence of deterioration or damage due to natural and accidental causes. The evaluation and reporting of structure conditions with written documentation, condition grades, sketches, and photographs. Written reports are used in an evaluation process that determines the structural integrity and the capability of structures to support loads imposed on them by the traveling public and/or natural forces. Documentation of underwater substructure conditions, including foundation scour is a primary job responsibility. Underwater construction and maintenance of bridge substructures are also a required team function. This type of field work requires work in situations that are hazardous in their nature such as traffic congestion, working on slopes, working on steel, working with explosives, underwater chain saws, underwater burning/cutting equipment, underwater hydraulic and pneumatic tools, working in confined areas and working in underwater surrounding conditions (e.g. black water, fast currents, marine life, biological and chemical contaminants).

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    + Experience using Word and Excel

    + Experience in drafting, sketching and report writing

    Additional Expectations:

    Management prefers applicants that can legally operate a vehicle.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology from an appropriately accredited institution and four (4) years of progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance of major steel or concrete bridges or other structures; or State of Bridge Inspector II 32000761 North Carolina 06/2018 Note: This is a generalized representation of positions in this class and is not intended to identify essential functions per ADA. Page 2 of 2 High school or General Education Development (GED) diploma and five (5) years of progressive experience in the inspection, construction, design or maintenance of major steel or concrete bridges or other structures; or an equivalent combination of training and directly related experience. In addition, successful completion of FHWA approved comprehensive bridge inspection training and/or tunnel inspection training is required for above water Team Leaders. For Underwater Applications: Advanced SCUBA diving certification issued by a national diver certification association such as the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) or The Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI), and 100 hours of verifiable underwater diving experience (e.g., log entries).
