Job Summary
The technician will contribute to vital research focused on the vulnerability of salt marshes to sea-level rise and the development of nature-based solutions for coastal wetland conservation—critical ecosystems providing essential services and societal benefits. This position will work at The Ecospatial Lab, housed within the Division of Coastal Sciences in the School of Ocean Science and Engineering at The University of Southern Mississippi.
Primary Job Duties and Responsibilities
+ Processing belowground vegetation biomass.
+ Measuring soil-porewater salinity in both field and laboratory settings.
+ Participating in field data collection.
+ Training and mentoring undergraduate students in laboratory and field techniques.
+ Contributing to lab meetings and performing other related duties as needed.
Minimum Qualifications
A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college of university in ecology, geography, or a closely related field and is highly motivated and eager to learn new research techniques. The job requires long hours of field work in salt marshes occasionally.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
+ Basic understanding of ecological or biological principles.
+ Familiarity with basic lab procedures and safety.
+ Awareness of field data collection basics.
+ Ability to follow instructions and learn new techniques.
+ Strong attention to detail in data collection and recording.
+ Ability to work well independently and as part of a team.
+ Good organizational skills.
+ Ability to perform physical tasks in field and lab settings.
+ Ability to communicate effectively.
+ Willingness to learn and contribute to research activities.
+ Ability to work reliably for the summer term.
Preferred Qualifications
A master’s degree and prior experience mentoring undergraduate students are preferred. Salary will be commensurate with experience.
