• AI/ML Satellite Imagery Screening Intern

    Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (Greenbelt, MD)


    Science Systems and Applications, Inc. (SSAI) is seeking an Intern to support NASA Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in the development of cloud screening algorithms to improve the quality and efficiency of commercial satellite data use. This position will be located on-site in Greenbelt, MD.

    Roles and Responsibilities:

    + Assist in the development and testing of algorithms designed to identify and exclude cloud-contaminated pixels in satellite imagery.

    + Analyze commercial Earth observation datasets to evaluate algorithm performance.

    + Contribute to improving data storage efficiency by supporting the filtering of unusable data.

    + Document methods, findings, and code for internal reports and possible external presentations.

    + Collaborate with SSAI and NASA scientists to refine algorithm criteria and validation approaches.

    Required Qualifications:

    + Currently enrolled in high school or an undergraduate program in a STEM field.

    + Experience programming in Python.

    + Ability to work onsite at NASA GSFC in Greenbelt, MD.

    + Strong analytical and communication skills.

    + US Citizenship or Permanent Residency required.

    Desired Qualifications:

    + Exposure to or interest in artificial intelligence (AI) or machine learning (ML) techniques.

    + Experience working with geospatial or remote sensing datasets.

    + Familiarity with training data generation or image classification workflows.

    + Interest in Earth science, environmental data, or satellite applications.

     

    Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, and use hands to touch, handle or feel objects, tools or controls. The employee frequently is required to talk and hear and occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
