Plumber / Pipefitter Master
This position is in the Facility Services department of the Port of New Orleans Maintenance Division and reports directly to the Plumber/Pipefitter Foreman.
This position serves as a Plumber/Pipefitter Master in inspecting, testing, maintaining, and repairing sprinkler systems, water/fire mains, valves, sewer lines, gas lines, plumbing systems and public water systems.
This position participates in the required PORT training program and obtains additional training in order to facilitate the efficient performance duties and/or required tasks. This is a safety sensitive position that requires random drug screening throughout the year.
The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid Louisiana Driver’s License, Class D, or other state equivalent, and be knowledgeable and capable of the safe operation of various types of equipment required to fulfill the needs of the position and the PORT. The incumbent is required to have knowledge of the use of a UHF radio, which requires proper radio etiquette. The incumbent shall utilize a telephone, cell phone, two-way communication device, computer, and e-mail to facilitate communications if required. The incumbent must be able to perform duties many times without direct supervision and be knowledgeable enough to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. Incumbent may be required to work overtime. May also require working immediately before, after, or during a disaster.
Minimum Qualifications
One year of the required experience for the following minimum qualifications must have been on-the-job experience:
Three years of experience or training in pipefitting, steam fitting, or plumbing.

Job Duties and Other Information
80%Plumbing/Pipefitting
Incumbent is responsible for inspecting fire sprinkler systems, to include fire pumps, for proper operation and assisting with the annual testing and certifications. Performs routine maintenance and repairs to sprinkler systems as needed to ensure proper operation. Resets tripped sprinkler systems as necessary. Inspects tests water/fire mains and lines, valves, and other components and makes repairs to same when needed. Installs new water lines and valves when required. Able to work with all types of pipes and fittings. Performs welding and soldering as needed. Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures and lines throughout the Port’s facilities. Operates various types of equipment in support of duties to include, but not limited to, bucket trucks, welding machines, and compressors.
15%Public Water Systems
Incumbent is responsible for assisting in operating and maintaining the Port’s Public Water Systems. Work includes sampling and testing the water to ensure compliance with chlorine residual and other components in the water. Performs flushing and other preventative or correction measures necessary to ensure quality water. Provides and performs connections of ships to the potable water system as well as others needing temporary water service.
5%Other Duties, Including Emergency Support
Incumbent is required to perform a variety of tasks and assignments, as directed by the supervisor, necessary to fulfill the mission of Facility Services Department and/or Port Maintenance Division.
Starting salary depends upon qualifications:
$21.05/hr. to $29.47/hr.
