    The Louisiana Special Schools are experiencing a critical shortage of certified teachers, school counselors, interpreters and educators of the Deaf or hard of hearing.

     

    The LA SPECIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT is seeking applicants for a

    SPEECH THERAPIST

    This is a full time 11 months and 8 hours per day position.

    The Speech Therapist will conduct and interpret assessments for students who may be in need of speech/language services. Provide therapeutic services to students with communication disorders. Attend evaluations and IEP meetings as necessary. *Refer to Job Specifications*

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology with the ability to obtain a Certificate of Clinical Competency-Speech (CCC-SP) issued by the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) or a Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from an accredited school with eligibility for a Clinical Fellowship Year.

    + Must meet the ancillary certification and licensure requirements of the State of Louisiana as a Speech Pathologist; Speech and Language Hearing Specialist; or Speech Therapist.

    + Must possess, or be willing to acquire, expressive and receptive sign language skills. The minimum acceptable Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) level for effective job performance is Advanced.

    Program Management Responsibilities

     

    + Implement school system policies and school philosophy and programs in the instruction of students.

    + Exhibit knowledge of special education rules and regulations associated with implementation of state and federal laws.

    + Exhibit understanding of children with handicaps and their needs, especially children served by the schools, and demonstrate awareness of specialists, agencies, and organizations that serve children with disabilities and their families.

    + Demonstrate knowledge of child growth and development.

    + Demonstrate appropriate and effective office management skills such as planning, organizing and implementing.

    + Exercise good judgment and common sense in making decisions.

    + Maintain complete and accurate records and exercise confidentiality of information in accordance with requirements of the law.

    + Apply knowledge and skills of program supervision demonstrating appropriate and effective interpersonal skills.

    + Maintain a safe physical environment and organize available space, materials, and/or equipment according to the requirements of the instructional program.

    + Maintain amplification and/or augmentative communication equipment and inventory assigned equipment.

    + Develop and maintain reasonable classroom rules for appropriate student behavior and the care of school property, facilities, and equipment.

    + Meet with parents, students, and faculty/staff members and maintain a positive relationship with professional associates, the community, the parents of the students and state and local agencies.

    + Participate in various committee meetings and staffing as appropriate.

    Programmatic Responsibilities

    + Conduct assessments in collaboration with staff to identify students with communication disorders as well as to inform instruction and intervention consistent with evidence-based practices.

    + Provide therapeutic services to students exhibiting communication disorder, including those involving language, articulation (speech sound disorders), fluency, and voice/resonance.

    + Provide therapeutic services targeting literacy achievement to impact the educational of students.

    + Coordinate scheduling of students for communication skills services according to Act 754 Regulations.

    + Use available curriculum materials, equipment, and facilities in the teaching/learning process in a variety of approaches/techniques to meet individual student educational needs.

    + Meet and maintain federal and state mandates as well as local policies in performance of duties to include Individualized Education Program (IEP) development, Medicaid billing, report writing, and treatment plan/therapy log development.

    + Develop and update annually the communication curriculum area of each child’s IEP and attend IEP meetings when appropriate.

    + Participate in school sponsored activities as a sponsor, advisor, and/or participant.

    + Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with students using effective expressive and receptive sign language skills.
