    Sarasota County is seeking a forward-thinking, highly skilled leader to serve as Assistant Director of Public Works, focused on managing our holistic stormwater operations. This is a pivotal leadership role offering an exciting opportunity to drive strategic water resource planning, engineering innovation, and environmental stewardship in Sarasota County!

     

    The Assistant Director reports to the Public Works Director and is primarily responsible for managing holistic stormwater functions within the Public Works Department. The position coordinates stormwater duties and responsibilities between the Field Services and Stormwater Divisions of Public Works with a high degree of public involvement and interaction with leadership across the County and internal/external stakeholders and is responsible for the efficient and effective provision of flood protection, surface water quality, regulation of development and infrastructure maintenance.

     

    Up to $4,000 relocation is available for those moving 50+ miles to join the premier community where people choose to live, work, and play!

     

    About This Role

    As the Assistant Director, you will:

    + Assist and support the Director with overall leadership, coordination, management and administration of stormwater functions within the Public Works Department and associated functions.

    + Responsible for keeping the Director informed of operational decisions/issues, providing guidance, supervision, coaching and leadership to unit managers.

    + Represent the Director and County at meetings as necessary.

    + Direct and supervise a professional and technical staff to facilitate an efficient and effective work team to achieve stated community outcomes and levels of service, including meetings and other customer service responsibilities.

    + Provide leadership and technical guidance to formulate, implement, and monitor policy and procedures appropriate to the day-to-day operation of various programs.

    + Promote a staff team with constructive attitudes and upbeat morale.

    + Assist the Director with staff recruitment, interview processes, and annual performance management.

    + Direct the preparation of the annual budget and exercise budgetary controls.

    + Respond to inquiries relative to specific projects and other information as required.

    + Attend public meetings, prepares reports, and conducts formal presentations.

    + Act as a liaison with the regulated community, regulatory agencies and professional organizations to resolve outstanding program issues.

    + Serve on technical advisory committee(s), task force(s), teams and focus groups to achieve common goals.

    + Maintain communication and coordination with external agencies.

    + Attend conferences, meetings, workshops, and training activities to ensure professional and personal growth.

    + Perform other related duties and projects as assigned by the Director.

    + Manage proactive assessments of fraud awareness, prevention, detection and risk mitigation activities in area of responsibility; oversees financial, compliance, operational and performance audits; reviews audit findings and ensures appropriate controls are established and implemented.

    Coordinate planning, regulatory, and infrastructure operations and maintenance responsibilities to meet the following objectives:

    + Operate an effective and efficient stormwater system;

    + Deliver efficient, cost-effective County stormwater services;

    + Minimize the impact of property flooding through management of stormwater services;

    + Deliver stormwater services in a sustainable, flexible, and responsive fashion; and

    + Development and implementation of the Stormwater, Watershed Management, Navigable Waterways and Regional Offsite Mitigation Capital Improvement Programs including financial, engineering, and construction activities along with coordination with peer departments.

     

    Work Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

     

    About You

    Minimum Qualifications:

    + Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, planning, architecture, or related field AND eight (8) or more years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or planning functions.

    + -OR- Master’s degree with 6 or more years of related experience AND six (6) years of progressively responsible experience in engineering or planning functions.

    + Four (4) or more years of supervisory/management experience.

    + A valid Florida Driver's license at the time of hire.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    + Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), AICP, or comparable credential.

    + Previous work as a Manager III, Senior Manager I, or equivalent leadership role.

     

    Physical Demands: Must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.

     

    S ubject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five (5) years.

    About Everything Else

    Starting Pay: Up to $165,000.00/annually, based on experience
