    Position summary:

    The Dean of Students (DOS) serves as a senior leader within the Student Success division and reports directly to the Associate Vice President of Student Success. This position plays a critical role in fostering a student-centered environment that enhances the quality of life for all students at Kilgore College—including residential, commuter, virtual, and dual credit populations.

     

    The Dean of Students is responsible for planning, developing, and leading programs and activities that enhance and promote a positive student experience at Kilgore College. The role provides leadership and oversight for student-focused areas, including student activities, student organizations, student government, housing, and athletics. Additionally, the DOS manages non-academic student complaints, conduct, and disciplinary processes.

    Required Skills and Qualifications:

    + Education: Master’s degree in higher education leadership/administration, student affairs, or a related field required .

    + Experience: Minimum five (5) years of progressive experience in student success or student affairs within a higher education environment, with direct experience in at least one functional area under the Dean’s oversight.

    + Supervision: At least three (3) years of experience supervising full-time staff.

    + Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills; strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

    + Collaboration: Proven ability to build positive, productive working relationships across departments and with external stakeholders.

    + Student-Focused: Commitment to a student-centered philosophy and best practices in student development.

    + Community College Mission: Strong understanding of and dedication to the community college mission, purpose, and goals especially in serving rural and first-generation students.

    + Budget Management: Demonstrated ability to develop, manage, and monitor departmental budgets, preferred.

    + Project Management: Experience in project planning and execution preferred.

    + Title IX: Formal training and previous experience as an investigator preferred.

    + Behavioral Intervention Team: Prior experience as a BIT team member is preferred.

    Key Duties and Responsibilities:

    Student Leadership & Advocacy

     

    + Develop and implement strategic initiatives to support student learning, engagement, and success

    + Advocate for students and serve as a liaison to faculty, staff, and administration.

    + Serve as the institution’s Chief Student Conduct Officer, ensuring fair enforcement of the Student Code of Conduct and due process in all non-academic disciplinary matters including investigating disruptive student behavior, processing student appeals, and initiating disciplinary measures, as needed.

    + Model, promote, and uphold community standards and student responsibilities as defined in the Student Handbook.

    + Educate students on their rights and responsibilities according to college policies.

     

    Student Engagement & Campus Life

     

    + Provide leadership for student life programming, including clubs, organizations, student government, and campus events.

    + Supervise the Director of Housing, Coordinator of Student Activities, and Athletic Director.

    + Foster student engagement through innovative programming for all student populations.

    + Collaborate with the Dean of Support Services and Retention to provide wraparound support services for students.

    Behavioral and Crisis Intervention

    + Chair the Behavioral Intervention Team (BIT) and develop and maintain a comprehensive BIT operation manual.

    + Train faculty and staff on behavioral reporting protocols.

    + Collaborate closely with Campus Police and other departments to maintain campus safety and respond to student-related incidents.

    + Act as a mandatory Title IX reporter and referral source; may serve as a Title IX investigator.

     

    Operational & Administrative Leadership

     

    + Lead planning and budgeting for areas within the Dean of Students portfolio; oversee expenditures and requisitions.

    + Assist with the coordination and execution of college-wide events and activities, as needed.

    + Collaborate with the Marketing Department to develop and promote student services and programs.

    + Manage hiring, supervision, evaluation, and professional development of assigned staff.

    + Serve on college committees and task forces as assigned.

    + Maintain a flexible work schedule that includes evenings and weekends as needed.

    + Perform additional duties as assigned.

    Supervisory Responsibilities:

    + 4 -  Full-Time Direct Reports    Varies -  Part-Time Direct Reports

    Physical Demands and Work Environment:

    + Work is normally performed in a typical interior/office and classroom environment.

    + No or very limited physical effort required; however, the employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 15 pounds.

    + No or very limited exposure to physical risk.

    Safety:

    + Provide resources for safe operation of units. Create and support workplace safety.

    + Compensation for this 12-month position is c ommensurate  with experience

    All full-time positions are located in Kilgore, TX. No fully work from home positions are available at this time. All employees must be available to physically present to work on the Kilgore, TX or Longview, TX Campus. Some Part-Time and Adjunct positions may be offsite but the candidate MUST live in the State of Texas.

    Positions will remain open until filled. Some Adjunct and Part-Time teaching positions may remain open perpetually as the need for part time instructors fluctuates with student enrollment. Teaching positions will be required to submit official transcripts upon an offer of employment. An offer of employment will be contingent upon passing a background check. Federal law prohibits the employment of unauthorized aliens. All persons hired must submit satisfactory proof of employment authorization and identity within three (3) days of being hired. Failure to submit proof within the required time shall result in immediate employment termination. All position appointments are subject to approval by the college's Board of Trustees.
