Position Summary
This middle management position is responsible for understanding and carrying out the purpose and mission of the Marion County Coroner’s Office. The position is required to oversee autopsies and examinations and other operations related to determining a person’s cause and manner of death, particularly in cases when the individual died under unusual circumstances. This position is responsible for understanding and implementing the management of staff and operational policies. This position will be responsible for training employees to perform forensic autopsies proficiently. The position is responsible for cultivating a productive, collaborative, and compliant work environment in order for our workforce to meet the needs of the decedents, residents of Indianapolis and Marion County.
Agency Summary
The purpose and mission of the Marion County Coroner’s Office is to investigate and determine a person’s cause and manner of death, particularly in cases when the individual died suddenly under unusual circumstances. The office consoles families, advocates for the deceased, and supports the needs of the Criminal Justice System by providing services in Death Scene Investigations, Forensic Autopsies and by providing high standard national practices to meet the needs of the residents of Marion County.

Position Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
+ Responsible for managerial oversight, leadership and coordination of overall decedent examinations performed by autopsy technicians related to death investigations.
+ Provides work direction, training and supervision to the autopsy technician staff and coordinated work with forensic pathologist in the lab in the absence of the supervisor.
+ Responsible for the planning and implementation of the pathology and laboratory operational needs to ensure that policies, practices, and procedures are maintained according to local, state, and national standards.
+ Responsible for coordinating morgue/laboratory activities which involve complex medico-legal autopsies and examinations and multiple agencies.
+ Oversees and monitors all actions and duties related to autopsy/pathology operational activities including proficiently performing autopsies, implementing safety standards, tracking property evidence, and maintaining confidentiality of decedents.
+ Assure that examinations of decedents are consistent with the investigation circumstances and interpret the condition of the body to Forensic Pathologist.
+ Assure that examinations adhere to Indiana Law requirements and maintain current knowledge of technical practices to maintain safe examination techniques to prevent injuries, while maintaining OSHA regulations.
+ Serve as liaison between the Coroner and Chief Deputy Coroner and outside agencies regarding laws, public information, evidence security, and internal policies and procedures.
+ Provides input on establishing agency policies and procedures, strategic planning, and implementation of evaluation efforts to assure that the agency is in compliance with local, state and federal laws.
+ Requires significant independent judgment to be used daily, in dealing with human remains, evidence, control, and evaluations to prevent critical harm to the agency and the enterprise as well as the criminal justice system.

Qualifications
Minimum Job Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelor Degree in Forensic Science, Mortuary Science, or related Field or five (5) years’ experience as an autopsy technician or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience. Good oral and written communication skills. Good computer skills. Must be able to lift 100 lbs. Knowledge of proper practices in the use, care, and maintenance of surgical and autopsy equipment, including equipment for cleaning and sterilization. Knowledge of aseptic and antiseptic cleaning and disinfecting, procedures, and precautions for using potential disinfectants and chemical preservatives. Valid Indiana driver’s license required. Completion of blood borne pathogens training is required within three months of hire. Continued education in autopsy techniques and practices after employment.
