    Job Summary:

    The University Director of Environmental Health & Safety ( EHS ) will be responsible for identifying any issues and/or compliance gaps related to environmental health and safety, determining, recommending and implementing regulatory compliance measures as well as best business practices across all FDU sites and processes.

     

    The University Director of EHS will investigate, develop, and implement in-person and online training opportunities and coordinate the course content associated with the online training resources. Through a process of collaboration and continual development with internal FDU constituents and EHS colleagues, including colleagues in the Office of the University Provost, General Counsel, Human Resources, Facilities, Risk Management and other key campus partners, this position will increase awareness of the department’s activities, identify safety and injury prevention techniques and training, continuously improve training curriculum and delivery methods, annually update procedures to reflect currency with standards, and collectively maintain metrics to evaluate and identify areas for improvement.

     

    The University Director of EHS provides technical and advisory support services for University wide program areas, which may include chemical safety, radiation safety, biological safety, occupational safety and industrial hygiene, waste management and other safety related programs. This position provides support to ensure compliance with applicable standards, laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.

     

    The University Director of EHS will provide support to Academic Affairs and the Grants & Sponsored Projects Office as needed to develop strategic plans to ensure attainment of University goals relative to research initiatives, grant applications and related EHS activity risk assessments, compliance requirements, outcomes, budget and resource planning.

     

    This position reports directly to the Associate Vice President for Administrative Operations.

    Required Qualifications:

    1. Bachelor’s degree (BA) required from four-year college or university in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, etc. Technical/managerial experience at an equivalent level may be considered in lieu of a degree.

    2. A minimum of seven years of relevant experience and/or training is required. Experience in higher education preferred.

    3. Professional certification such as CIH or CSP strongly preferred.

    4. Experience in building, leading and maintaining EHS programs, including chemical hygiene and EHS emergencies.

    5. Experience in biosafety and ISO 14001 oversite preferred.

    6. Strong understanding of federal and state environmental, health, and safety regulations required. Liaison to EHS regulatory agencies,

    7. Ability to write technical reports, management summaries, presentations and/or documents for internal and external circulation.

    8. Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of an organization and to listen empathetically, understand information presented by people with different communication styles and different points of view, and mediate disagreements.

    9. The incumbent must be able to wear various forms of personal protective equipment ( PPE ).

    10. Demonstrated skill at delivering, developing, and presenting effective, engaging presentations and training sessions in-person and with electronic learning applications.

    11. Ability to work autonomously and as part of team.

    12. Must have a valid U.S. driver’s license.

    13. Must be available for 24 hour on-call emergency response.

    14. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check. Candidates for hire will be required to sign a waiver authorizing the background check and produce a Social Security Card.
