    Job Description:

    Under the direction of the Registered Nurse (RN), this position provides care for women and newborns. The Patient Care Technician functions as a clinical support partner, assisting the patient care team by performing various tasks and procedures as instructed by a licensed professional. Additionally, the Patient Care Technician may assume the responsibilities of a health unit coordinator.

     

    Department/Unit: Woman & Newborns - Labor/Delivery Unit

     

    Entry Rate: $17.60+ (based on patient care experience)

     

    Shift Details: 36 hours per week, 12-hour shifts

     

    Part-time hours with manager approval

     

    Schedule: Variable including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays required

    _*This position will work as a Patient Care Technician / Health Unit Coordinator and can train to work as a Scrub Technician to_ _utilizes sterile techniques to prepare surgical suites for C-Section and tubal ligation cases, prepares delivery tables for vaginal births, and functions as an operating room technician, assisting physicians with surgical procedures._

    Essential Functions

    Patient Care:

    Prioritizes and delivers basic patient care which may include toileting, bathing, linen and clothing changes, fresh water and ice, ambulating, comfort measures, and other patient needs.

     

    Assists with admission, discharge, and transfer of patients.

     

    Provides excellent customer service when responding to patient and family requests.

     

    Reports and records patient care findings and data in a timely manner. Reports changes in the patient condition quickly and secures qualified assistance as needed.

     

    Based on unit, may also be responsible for telemetry duties.

     

    Can function as a patient care attendant by monitoring patient, taking care of patient care needs, and involving other members of the patient care team as needed.

     

    When working on a clinical unit, may be required to take medications from the delivery system to the RN.

    Collaboration:

    Collaborates and consults with RN and other members of the interdisciplinary team for best patient care.

     

    Demonstrate effective teamwork, prioritization, communication, and organization.

     

    Performs non-nursing duties as delegated (e.g., cleaning, stocking, answering phones, clerical support, providing directions).

     

    Implements plan of care as delegated.

     

    Performs assigned duties within Scope of Practice and performs specialized procedures with skill validation and according to regulatory standards. Fosters a safe environment by complying with the safety policy and taking appropriate action in an emergency.

    Patient Care Support and Clerical Activities:

    Answer patient call lights.

     

    Schedules tests and treatments as ordered.

     

    May provide access control to visitor entrance to secure units.

     

    Answers unit telephones and disseminates information appropriately.

     

    Processes, organizes, files and maintains patient and unit records.

     

    Transcribes physician orders.

     

    Acts as unit receptionist.

     

    May organize, stock and maintain supplies on the unit.

    Scrub Technician Duties:

    + Ensures that the patient room is ready to receive the patient with equipment and supplies necessary during the labor and delivery process. May be responsible for maintaining and stocking birthing rooms appropriately.

    + Assists patients with bed baths, showering, use of bed pans and restrooms, foley catheter care, and ambulation.

    + Obtains and documents vital signs of patients and newborns before, during, and after delivery.

    + Prepares the room for vaginal delivery by draping the patient and preparing appropriate equipment, including the delivery table, and assists the RN.

    + Prepares the room for C-Section by preparing the patient, scrubbing for procedures, setting up and passing instruments, and completing all instrument, sponge, and sharp counts with the RN. Ensures sterility is maintained throughout the operative procedure.

    + Understands the plan of care and delivers basic patient care by collecting and documenting patient data and reporting patient changes to the RN.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Basic Life Support Certification (BLS) for healthcare providers

    Current CNA Certification.

     

    -or-

     

    Completion of nursing assistant training program (verification of nursing assistant training program completion required at time of hire, and CNA certification required within 120 days of hire)

     

    -or-

     

    Completion of a fundamentals of nursing class with a passing grade within the past two (2) years (official transcript required at time of hire; CNA certification required within 120 days of hire)

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Previous experience as Labor and Delivery Operating Room (OR) Technician

    + One Year CNA experience or applicable healthcare experience.

    + Current enrollment in nursing school with ability to work night shifts.

    + Basic computer skills.

    + Experience as a Secretary in a hospital.

    + Experience using electronic medical records.

    + Experience with word processing software.

    + Basic understanding of medical terminology.

    Physical Requirements:

    + Ongoing need for employee to see and read information, labels, assess patient needs, operate monitors, identify equipment and supplies.

    + Frequent interactions with patient care providers, patients, and visitors that require employee to verbally communicate as well as hear and understand spoken information, alarms, needs, and issues quickly and accurately, particularly during emergency situations.

    + Manual dexterity of hands and fingers to manipulate complex and delicate equipment with precision and accuracy. This includes frequent computer use and typing for documenting patient care, accessing needed information, medication preparation, etc.

    + Expected to lift and utilize full range of movement to transfer patients. Will also bend to retrieve, lift, and carry supplies and equipment. Typically includes items of varying weights, up to and including heavy items.

    + Need to walk and assist with transporting/ambulating patients and obtaining and distributing supplies and equipment. This includes pushing/pulling gurneys and portable equipment, including heavy items. Often required to navigate crowded and busy rooms (full of equipment, power cords on the floor, etc.)

    + May be expected to stand in a stationary position for an extended period of time.

    The hourly range for this position is listed below. Actual hourly rate dependent upon experience.

     

    $17.60 - $22.88
