    Job Summary and Qualifications

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    Collects blood from patients of all ages asrequired by physician orders including difficultpatients.Accessionslab orders asappropriate. Processes blood to prepare for testing in all laboratory areas.Performs Point of Care testing.Responds to phone inquiriesin a timely mannerandis a resource to others.

    SPECIFIC ELEMENTS & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    Know policies,proceduresand practices necessary to perform a variety of blood drawing procedureswitha very highskill levelusing standard techniques andequipmentAbleto answer questionsregardingspecimen requirements and laboratoryprocessesAble to research special tests and problems

     

    Know policies,proceduresand practices necessary to perform specimen processing duties(centrifugation, batching from offsite locations,aliquoting andspecialshipping asappropriateandmaintainingspecimen integrity through compliance with transport/storagerequirements)

     

    Able to perform point of care testing

     

    Responds to requests for emergency servicein a timely manner, able tomanagemultiple conflicting prioritiesand direct othersas needed

     

    Is Aware of the role of the position and its potential impact on patient care, the work unit, the department, and facilityoperationsMaintainsexcellent working relationships with coworkers within and outside of the laboratory

     

    Makes decisions andestablishespriorities for specimen collection and processing based on established policies and procedures. Worksin an independentmanner Canfunction without supervision

     

    Maintains clean workstationManages inventory efficiently being awareof levelsand outdates of materials, rotates stock,eliminateswaste

     

    Demonstrates initial and annual competency in phlebotomy,specimenprocessing,andwaived and moderatecomplexity testingas POC or in the Lab,including all computer relatedfunctions Ableto train others inmostfunctions of the joband develop advanced skills in others

     

    Performs and documents various quality control and equipment maintenance procedures tomaintaincompliance with internal and externalregulationsKnowsthe regulations and can explain the requirements toothers Ableto troubleshoot identified issues

     

    Organizes workload to meet the needs of the institutionCapable of handling multiple priorities in a high volumesettingwithinthe assigned shift and according to required TAT Able to work independently and as part of a team to meet these goals, directing others if needed

     

    Adheres to hospital policy for reporting patient safety issues, including errors.Consistently “Puts Patient Safety First” when performing job duties or providingcare Ableto documentoccurrencesandparticipatesin improvements topatient care

     

    MeetsHealthstreamrequirements and exceeds continuing educationrequirements Sharesinformation with groupandencourages professional growth within the department
