Description
The Manager, Public Policy will develop and execute advocacy strategies and policy initiatives in support of Amazon’s policy priorities related to trade and customs. The Manager will work closely with other public policy teams, Legal, PR, and the relevant business units to ensure alignment with business priorities and goals.
The Manager will monitor and report relevant legislative and regulatory activity related to trade and customs, develop positioning and mitigation/engagement strategies, and coordinate external advocacy efforts, outreach programs, and key initiatives in concert with business objectives. The Manager will be responsible for leading engagements with trade associations, think tanks, advocacy groups, and other relevant external stakeholders on key trade and customs policy issues.
As appropriate, the Manager will be responsible for facilitating meetings between executives and key stakeholders. The Manager will report to the Senior Manager, Public Policy. The position will be based in Arlington, VA, USA.
Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree required.
• 8 years of relevant public policy experience, including direct involvement in legislative processes and government relations.
• An ability and desire to travel is required.
Preferred Qualifications
• The ideal candidate will have experience interacting with U.S. policymakers on trade and customs issues and broad government relations strategy experience.
• Expert understanding of the U.S. legislative and regulatory policymaking processes.
• Highly effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills. You can create factual, relevant and easily understandable talking points and other messaging, and you can persuasively deliver it to relevant audiences. You can make points intelligently, concisely, and in a friendly way.
• Demonstrated ability to effectively and comfortably interact at the highest corporate, legislative, regulatory agency, and other government levels.
• A self-starter who can take general direction and produce specific results. When the resources are not immediately at-hand, you enjoy reaching out to a wide array of functional groups across an organization to get the information you need.
• Highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity. People in your industry regard you with the strongest professional reputation.
• Ability to understand how technical language in legislative and regulatory proposals could affect corporate operations, identify business implications, and synthesize policy documents for internal customers.
• Prior experience with steep learning curves, and the ability to effectively communicate complex information to a wide variety of audiences.
• Ability to influence, negotiate with, and persuade others.
• Must be flexible and demonstrate strong judgment/decision-making skills and political acumen.
• Juris Doctor or Master’s Degree.
• Broad government relations strategy experience
• Demonstrated experience building relationships with groups such as trade associations, think tanks, or other non-profits to help achieve public policy objectives. Or, demonstrated experience working for one such organization and building relationships with supporters to achieve public policy objectives.
• Ability to understand how technical language in legislative and regulatory proposals could affect corporate operations, identify business implications, and synthesize policy documents for internal and external audiences.
• Demonstrated ability to be both a substantive issue expert on matters related to Amazon’s business and a manager of complex regulatory and political issues
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and experience creating and effectively delivering factual, relevant, and easily understandable talking points and other messaging
• Demonstrated ability to effectively and comfortably interact at the highest corporate, legislative, regulatory agency, and other government levels
• Ability to maintain the highest personal levels of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and integrity
