    This posting is for a Transportation Worker III in the Division 9 Traffic Services office. This position is stationed in Forsyth County, but work will be performed across all 5 counties in Division 9, as needed. The primary purpose of this position is to serve as the Sign Crew Leader/Sign Fabricator/Inventory Manager in Stokes County Traffic Services. The duties of this position include fabricating signs as needed for signing projects across Division 9; installing, maintaining, and repairing signs across Division 9; overseeing/maintaining the sign inventory; installing and maintaining detours; 24-hour emergency response to damaged regulatory signs; and snow and ice removal. This position should have the ability to plan and carry out assigned projects independently. Must be able to properly install or manage the installation of temporary traffic control in accordance with NCDOT Standards. Must be able to communicate effectively with various people across multiple organizations, as well as with the public. This position requires the ability to work in an outside environment, including extreme heat and cold, year-round.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    + Knowledge of Advanced Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety Practices.

    + Experience in the installation of roadway signs.

    + Knowledge of sign design, layout, and fabrication.

    + Knowledge of maintaining the sign inventory.

    + Experience operating a sign truck with attachments.

    Additional Expectations:

    This position must apply safety philosophy to all operations. Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on work sites including night work, height, highway traffic and traversing rough terrain in performing necessary work. Ability to supervise activities of lower-level employees and instruct them in proper work methods in the installation, repair, and maintenance of highway signs.

     

    Safety toed shoes are required.

     

    This position will be responsible for transporting inmates for work detail. An inmate card approved by the NC Department of Public Safety must be issued to NCDOT employees to transport inmates. In order to obtain an inmate card applicants must undergo a criminal history check, complete necessary training and orientation, and be at least 21 years of age.

     

    The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement. Either possession o a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As s condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substance and alcohol testing.

     

    Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and five years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Necessary Special Requirements:

    Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
