    2025-2026 School Year LOCATION: Newton High SchoolPOSITION: Drumline/Band Assistant (Sponsor position)TOTAL SALARY: $3,243.00 (please note the salary is paid in 2 equal installments on 9/22/25 and 11/22/25)REPORTS TO: Band Director/Activity DirectorJOB DESCRIPTION: see attached Newton Community School District is seeking a dedicated and skilled Drumline/Band Assistant to lead and develop the percussion section of our high school marching band.The Drumline/Band Assistant will be responsible for teaching drumline techniques, organizing rehearsals, assisting in show design, and preparing students for performances, competitions, and community events.This role is critical to building musical excellence, discipline, and teamwork within the percussion unit.     REQUIRED:

    + Drumline/band experience required (experience preferred)

    + Proficiency in marching percussion with prior instructional or performance experience

    + Strong knowledge of drumline pedagogy, technique, and rehearsal methods.

    + Ability to read and teach music notation and drill charts.

    + Excellent communication, organizational, and leadership skills.

    + Availability for summer band camp, after-school rehearsals, and weekend events

    PREFERRED :

    + Bachelor’s degree in Music, Music Education, or related field.

    + Prior experience teaching at the high school or college level.

    + Familiarity with competitive marching band circuits (e.g., BOA, USBands, local circuits).

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    + Instruction & Rehearsals:

    + Teach marching percussion techniques including snare drum, tenor drums, bass drums, and cymbals.

    + Plan and lead sectional rehearsals and full ensemble practices in coordination with the Band Director.

    + Ensure students develop strong fundamentals in rhythm, timing, technique, and ensemble performance.

    + Show Preparation:

    + Collaborate with the Band Director and drill writers to integrate drumline elements into the marching show.

    + Assist in the creation or selection of warm-ups, cadences, and show music.

    + Clean and refine parts to achieve maximum performance quality.

    + Leadership & Mentorship:

    + Foster a positive, inclusive, and respectful learning environment.

    + Mentor student leaders such as drum captains and section leaders.

    + Serve as a role model and encourage discipline, punctuality, and commitment.

    + Logistics & Equipment:

    + Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of percussion instruments and equipment.

    + Help with setup and teardown for practices and performances.

    + Ensure safe transportation of equipment for away games and competitions.

    + Events & Competitions:

    + Attend all scheduled rehearsals, football games, parades, and competitions.

    + Support student participation in solo and ensemble contests, drumline showcases, and clinics when applicable.
