Job Title: Detective

Supervisor: Commanding Officer, Detective Division
Work Location: Eastern, Southern, Northern Region Detective Squad
Hours of Work: Three (3) tours of twelve hours and twenty minutes, with four (4) consecutive
rest days
SUMMARY
The MTA Police Department is seeking qualified members from the rank of Police Officer who are interested in being assigned as a Detective. MTA Police Detectives are non-uniformed members of the MTA Police Department. The position may include administrative duties within the Department.
RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Criminal and non-criminal investigations, relating to MTA Agencies and properties . They are fully commissioned officers in both New York and Connecticut and are expected to fully function as a law enforcement official.
+ Detectives may also serve in liaison positions with outside local, state, and federal law enforcement and emergency response agencies.
+ MTA Police Detectives may also prepare or review various police reports, forms and logs and various support operations that the department may coordinate with other law enforcement agencies and public emergency response groups.
+ Detectives assess local area conditions and coordinate activities in the field, conduct crime searches and arrests, review investigations made by uniformed members, safeguard, process, collect and catalog evidence and assist the MTA Operational personnel in any and all ways to assure the proper safeguarding of MTA operations and the riding public.
+ Must be able to work any day of the week, during any time period and often outdoors during inclement weather. Detectives must be able to deal with emergency situations and possibly hostile individuals.
+ The nature of the work is dangerous and requires the ability to make quick and accurate judgments in emergency situations.
+ Detectives are required to follow procedures and policy that are set out in the collective bargaining agreements and by MTA Police Management.
QUALIFICATIONS
Interested members must, at a minimum, possess the following qualifications to be considered for this position:
+ ( 5 ) years of Police experience (as defined in section 1.20 of the NYS criminal procedure code) with at least t hree ( 3 ) years of service “On-Property” with the MTA Police Department by Ju ne 1, 202 5
+ Be able to demonstrate strong communication , inter- personal, and multi-tasking skills.
+ Must be able to show self-initiated activity.
+ Must show demonstrated writing ability as well as exhibit proficiency in report writing by submitting a writing sample.
+ Flexibility to work various tours, various work locations and be willing to be "on - call" based on the needs of the Department.
+ Ability to access databases from other law enforcement agencies.
+ The ability to travel from residence to incidents within the MTAP D service area in a reasonable time will be taken into consideration.
+ Must have extensive knowledge of the New York State and Connecticut criminal law statutes.
+ Candidates who have recent substantiated discipline/suspension, negative supervisor reviews , and/or who have a documented history of lateness or absenteeism related to non-justifiable excessive sick records may be removed from interview consideration.
+ Omission of documented disciplinary records will result in your disqualification.
+ Favorable recommendations will be considered but are not required.
+ Application will be reviewed for content, accuracy, and completeness .
+ Application should include the candidate ’ s q ualifications and attributes for assignment to Detective Division including but not limited to:
+ Strong enforcement activity /history
+ Any awards, medals, official recognition received.
+ Details of involvement in a significant police incident
+ Example(s) of self-initiated activity that represents high level of work- ethic.
+ Example of an incident where candidate worked successfully with an external agency such as Nassau Co unty PD, Westchester County DA office , etc.
+ Example(s) demonstrating problem solving ability.
+ Example(s) of leadership qualities possessed by candidate.
I n addition to the above requirements, the ideal candidate would possess some/any of the following:
+ Successful completion of this or another agenc y’s Criminal Investigators Course
+ Successful completion of this or another agency ’s topical investigators courses (i.e. Special Victims, Trauma Informed Interviews, NYPD Homicide Investigators Course, HIDTA courses, Dignitary Protection etc . )
+ Past i nvestigative e xperience within the MTAPD OR from another agency
+ Attended a local, state, federal academ y / forums such as FBI Academy
+ Not every candidate will be interviewed.
+ Successful completion of the panel interview
OTHER INFORMATION
Interested employees who meet the above listed qualifications will be invited to participate in a panel interview.
Candidate should understand that they are not guaranteed an appointment to the rank of Detective, even if they meet the above qualifications.
