    POSITION REQUIREMENTS

    + A valid driver's license and pre-physical examination are required.

    + Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application.

    + Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the posted job location

    + Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process.

    + Prior to hire, the selected candidate will be required to complete a preemployment physical and work assessment.

    THE ROLE

    The selected candidate will be responsible for:

    + Operation of the bridge

    + Reports any electrical/mechanical/boating issues

    + Maintains an accurate daily bridge log and reports all incidents in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations

    + The Attendant is required to remain on site during their shift and not leave the post until properly relieved.

    POSITION HIGHLIGHTS

    There are currently two full-time (40 hours per week) vacancies

     

    + South Norwalk Bridge with the following schedule:

    + Monday & Tuesday: 4:00 pm to Midnight

    + Wednesday & Thursday: Off

    + Friday, Saturday, Sunday: 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

    + Devon Bridge with the following schedule:

    + Wednesday through Sunday 4pm-12am

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    This class is accountable for performing the full range of basic tasks in the maintenance and operation of moveable bridges under the jurisdiction of the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    + Maintains the operation of moveable bridges in accordance with the standard operating procedures;

    + Keeps the bridge control houses neat and clean at all times;

    + Removes and disposes of trash;

    + Clears the access of snow and ice;

    + Reports all mechanical problems to a designated Department of Transportation (DOT) representative as directed;

    + Maintains a neat and accurate daily bridge log or diary;

    + Logs and reports all incidents to a designated DOT representative as directed;

    + Complies with all State laws, Federal laws and U.S. Coast Guard regulations;

    + Must remain on site and not leave the post until properly relieved;

    + Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    + Knowledge of

    + physical properties of standard maintenance materials;

    + mechanical principles;

    + basic practices of the maintenance trades;

    + Skills

    + interpersonal skills;

    + oral and written communication skills;

    + Ability to

    + use hand and power tools and make minor repairs to simpler mechanical equipment;

    + operate equipment listed on the attached addendum;

    + understand and follow written and oral instructions;

    + utilize computer software.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    + E xperience working with a diverse group of individuals in a customer service setting

    + Experience communicating in person, over the phone, and in writing with a variety of constituents, including co-workers and the public

    + Experience maintaining neat and accurate daily records

    + Experience working in an environment in which you are required to stay on shift until you are properly relieved

    + Experience with minor custodial functions

    + Experience working independently and performing your duties with minimum supervision

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain an appropriate valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license and other licenses required by governmental authorities.

    + Attendant must be able to train new employees and relief employees to perform the duties and responsibilities of this class as required.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    + Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina and physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness so as to be able to perform the duties.

    + A physical examination will be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents in this class may have to work outdoors in weather extremes. They must be constantly aware of all existing weather and traffic conditions (marine and vehicular). Attendants must stay alert while working in the environment of potentially dangerous machinery and remain alert for the duration of their shifts.
