Job Summary
To advance the mission and programs of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) by responding to calls for service regarding public safety, health, welfare of animals, and quality of life that involves domestic animals and, in some circumstances, wildlife.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
+ Resolve conflict while promoting a responsible community where animals are inherently valued and owners are committed to their pets.
+ Respond to calls for service regarding public safety, health, and welfare of animals.
+ Investigate reports of animal ordinance violations and takes appropriate action to resolve violations and/or human/animal conflict.
+ Investigate and follow-up on animal bite’s and cruelty/neglect investigations.
+ Respond to injured or sick animals in a timely manner
+ Assist citizens with interpretation and understanding of animal ordinances, department procedures, and responsible animal ownership.
+ Issue warnings and citations for violations of animal ordinance in collaboration with the City of Des Moines Police department.
+ Maintain accurate police reports, and associated paperwork of daily activities and submits required documentation in a timely manner.
+ Patrol Des Moines streets, initiate contact with citizens and animals to ensure compliance with animal ordinances and the humane treatment of animals.
+ Operate Animal Services vehicles in a safe and prudent manner to respond to calls for service, stocks supplies, and maintains vehicles and all animal control equipment.
+ Perform euthanasia on animals, as required.
+ Represent the Animal Rescue League of Iowa and the City of Des Moines in a professional and courteous manner at all times showing a commitment to the mission, values, goals, and success of the Animal Rescue League of Iowa.
+ Engage with ARL staff, other ASO Officers, Police Officers, command staff and members of the public in a professional manner at all times.
+ Perform additional duties, as assigned.

Education and/or Experience
+ High School diploma or GED, required.
Qualifications
+ Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record, required.
+ Ability to operate larger vehicles.
+ Ability to pass a police background check, required.
+ Must be able to function in a fast-paced and stressful environment.
+ Ability to effectively and clearly communicate.
+ Ability to prepare police reports, emails, citations, activity logs, etc.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with peers, supervisors, and the public.
+ Ability to apply reason or logic rapidly in a legally correct manner when under physical, emotional, or intellectual stress.
+ Ability to read and understand City and State animal code books and materials.
+ Ability to performance basic mathematical skills.
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
+ Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
+ Ability to work outdoors in high heat or cold environment on occasion.
+ Work may expose employee to odors, diseases of animals that are possibly contagious, bites, scratches, animal waste, and moderate noise level.
+ Must be able to stand and sit for long periods of time.
At-Will Employment
There is no minimum period of employment guaranteed or implied by acceptance of an employment offer. It is the policy of the Animal Rescue League that employment for this position is at will, which means that employment is for no specific term and that employment may be terminated by the employee or the Animal Rescue League at any time without cause.
This position will have a schedule of four 10 hour shifts, Wednesday-Saturday
