Purpose
The Senior Audit Manager contributes to the overall success of the Audit Function in support of the Audit Department executing its global mandate, ensuring specific individual goals, plans, initiatives are executed / delivered in support of the team’s business strategies and objectives.
The successful candidate will be a subject matter expert on U.S. AML/BSA/Sanctions requirements, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act and OFAC regulations, guidance, and regulatory expectations. The candidate will lead AML audits to assess the design and operating effectiveness of internal controls relating to risk monitoring, challenge, and reporting activities within the U.S and determine whether they are in compliance with governing regulations, internal policies, and procedures. The candidate will have experience engaging with U.S. regulators to assist with BSA/AML/OFAC regulatory examinations.
The candidate will support the Director, U.S. AML Audit by evaluating the control environment, fostering an inclusive work environment, and managing development of personnel. The candidate is able to apply risk-based auditing standards, frameworks, practices, techniques, processes and methodologies, and regulatory guidelines to the performance and review of audits, including providing high quality, value-added advisory services to Management as part of audits or special projects/assignments, while ensuring that audit methodology standards are met.
What You’ll Do
+ Acts primarily as Officer in Charge (OIC) as a team member for assigned audits. May act as Audit Principal (AP) for low to medium complexity audits.
+ As OIC/AP, oversees the execution, planning, and reporting. Obtains a thorough understanding of the end-to-end business/unit/process and associated risks, develops an appropriate risk-based audit approach and schedules timing and resources.
+ Ensures audit results are gathered and determines the root cause of the problem. Prepares and/or reviews audit results and findings for presentation to management. Follows-up for corrective action/progress against any reported issues. Ensures relevant information that impacts other audit function areas is shared.
+ Maintains familiarization and technical expertise with the assigned business unit(s) including organizational structure, personnel, activities and products, new product development, financial performance and risk and problem areas to understand how the Bank’s risk appetite and risk culture should be considered in day-to-day activities and decisions.
+ Interacts and partners with Senior and Executive Management to understand the risks within the business, business changes and other significant events that could significantly affect the business and/or the audit plan. Supports a client focused culture throughout their team to deepen client relationships and leverage broader Bank relationships, systems, and knowledge.
+ Well-developed judgment, management, decision-making and problem-solving skills are required in order to effectively deal with a rapidly changing, complex business environment.
+ Good time management skills in order to manage multi-functional accountabilities through prioritization, delegation, motivation, conflict resolution and the promotion of ideas. Interacts and coordinates with other groups involved to complete timely review of workpapers, ensuring internal control weaknesses are clearly documented with recommendations addressing the root cause and are communicated timely to management.
+ Supports ongoing monitoring activities to stay abreast of changes (business/industry/regulatory), emerging risks, and themes or systemic issues that may impact the risk assessment of the audit universe and the audit plan.
+ Supports a high-performance environment and implements a people strategy that attracts, retains, develops, and motivates their team by fostering an inclusive work environment and using a coaching mindset and behaviours; communicating vison/values/business strategy; and managing succession and development planning for the team.
+ Meets Department training requirements and works with other audit teams as required and carries out specific projects when required.
+ Ensures Scotiabank standards and the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Code of Ethics are maintained in completion of all assignments.
What You’ll Bring
+ University/Post secondary degree in Business or equivalent. Technical/Professional qualifications such as MBA, CFA, ACAMS / CAMS and/or CIA.
+ At least 5+ years of relevant experience covering financial crimes (BSA/AML, OFAC) as an internal auditor (third-line or defense) and/or compliance professional (second line of defense) for financial institutions.
+ Experience with analyzing AML Transaction Monitoring and Sanctions Screening systems and models, including use of data analytics.
+ Proven ability to work in high levels of ambiguity and in a rapidly changing environment.
+ Highly proficient at applying Scotiabank methodology and using risk-based auditing standards and practices.
+ Strong analytical skills necessary to assess risk exposures and understand risk quantification and valuation methodologies.
+ Ability to quickly understand the risks associated with new products, processes, routines and formulate audit procedures to ensure that the controls are adequate.
+ The incumbent must possess expert time management skills in order to manage multi-functional accountabilities through prioritization, delegation, motivation, conflict resolution and the promotion of ideas.
+ Excellent written communication skills are essential, with superior issue and audit report writing skills. In addition, the incumbent should be skilled at verbal engagement and presentation, of a caliber suitable for direct exposure to executive management.
