    The Pathology Department is seeking a **_Sr. Research Specialist_** with a sophisticated understanding of techniques and a solid foundation in the underlying science, gained from experience. Make intellectual contribution in specialized scientific lab or core facility. Examples of core facilities utilizing sophisticated instrumentation would be flow cytometry, high throughput genetics, DNA/RNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, RNA in situ hybridization etc. Capable of troubleshooting, applying specialized scientific knowledge and experience to make decisions, and training/guiding other laboratory personnel.

    Specific Duties and Responsibilities

    + Develop, design and manage projects with the implementation of animal protocols, design and planning of experiments including animal breeding, experimental treatments, surgical techniques, and post-operative care.

    + The ideal candidate will have strong molecular biology bench skills and knowledge including nucleic acid/protein handling and hands-on experience in cell or animal gene targeting, genotyping.

    + Maintain the research animal colony and oversee compliance with ethical and regulatory guidelines for animal research.

    + Perform various organ/tissue collection followed by histological, immunohistochemical or in-situ hybridization experiments.

    + Perform computerized image analysis to collect and interpret data from the experiments using Microsoft and statistical analysis software.

    + Perform the implementation of state-of the art experimental protocols, organization, documentation and analysis of data, presentation of the findings.

    + Utilize specialized knowledge to set up and develop and characterize sophisticated mouse model of multi-etiology dementia (MED).

    + Act as consultant to refine or adapt methodologies to fit research objectives. Collaborates in development of new protocols and uses of equipment.

    + Make decisions regarding research projects that may require assessment, revision of objectives, or altering scientific direction; considers resources and lab priorities when making decisions.

    + Independently develop protocol and criteria and perform all research assays specific to the research laboratory interests.

    + Author/co-author publications. Contribute original thoughts, hypotheses, and analysis to write reports, abstracts and manuscripts.

    + Collaborates with other technologists, managers, and faculty both inside, and possibly outside of JHU.

    + Perform miscellaneous related duties as assigned.

    _Equipment, Machine, or Tool Requirements_

    + Computer and Laboratory equipment maintaining and operation lab such as: PCR, RT-PCR, Western blot, BaseScope assay, cell culture systems, spectrophotometer, centrifuges, freezers, vacuum, etc.

    Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

    + Working with animal models, experience in stereotaxic surgeries, experience in intravenous/intrathecal mode of AAV delivery.

    + Have strong communication skills.

    + Uses various software applications, such as spreadsheets, relational databases, statistical packages, and graphics packages to assemble, manipulate and/or format data and/or test reports, with solid background in basic biostatistics.

    + Advanced knowledge of good laboratory practices.

    + Able to work independently, under minimal supervision with strong decision-making skills and good judgment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s Degree in Biological Ccience.

    + Four years' experience in a comparable laboratory performing relevant techniques.

    Preferred Qualifications

    + Expertise working with animal models.

    + PhD

     

    Classified Title: Sr. Research Specialist

    Role/Level/Range: ACRP/04/MC

    Starting Salary Range: $48,000 - $84,100 Annually ($70,500 targeted; Commensurate w/exp.)

     

    Employee group: Full Time

     

    Schedule: Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm

     

    FLSA Status: Exempt

    The listed salary range represents the minimum and maximum Johns Hopkins University offers for this position, based on a good faith estimate at the time of posting. Actual compensation will vary depending on factors such as location, skills, experience, market conditions, education, and internal equity. Not all candidates will qualify for the highest salary in the range.
