    Description of Job

    The Facilities department provides a safe, clean, and functional facility to enable the faculty, staff, and students of FRCC to achieve their educational goals. As a Grounds & Nursery II professional, you will properly maintain FRCC/Larimer Campus grounds to the high standard that the Facilities department expects. You will maintain all flower beds on campus as well as maintain the campus grounds daily. You will also manage snow removal duties for the Larimer Campus. You must have or be able to obtain a Private Pesticides Applicators License within the first six months of employment.

    DUTIES:

    Operation & Maintain Irrigation System

    Operate, install and maintain irrigation system for the entire campus, including sprinklers, back flow preventers, and drip zones. Set, monitor and program all controllers for all zones on campus. Trouble-shoot zone deficiencies stemming from water leaks, valves not operating properly and electrical issues. Audit each zone monthly by examining scheduling and adjusting heads or replacing broken heads as needed. Assist Grounds II with repairs as needed and assist with the installation control mechanisms. Contractor coordination may be required.

    Turf Management

    Perform turf maintenance includes mowing, trimming, edging, aeration, and fertilization. Identify diseases or infestations of trees and shrubs and consult with other Grounds II for recommendations for management. Maintain turf, maintenance and equipment.

    Snow Removal and Maintenance Operations

    Participate during snow removal operations including operating snow removal equipment, ice melt spreaders and hand shoveling while following the correct reporting procedures. Maintain all snow equipment and adjust as required. Schedule, track and conduct preventative maintenance on snow brushes, mowers, bobcat, tool-cat, snowplows etc., logging all maintenance. Contact vendors for the purpose of information, pricing and placing orders for goods and services of outside vendors or contractors to provide certain services, above the scope and/or time restraints of in-housework. Coordinate with snow removal contractor as needed.

     

    Maintenance of Flower Beds and Records

     

    Maintain established plantings, seasonal floral displays, shrubs, and trees and xeriscaping areas. This includes trimming, thinning, mulching, and replanting. Maintain drip and scheduling irrigations. This also includes replacing trees and recommending additional tree plantings.

     

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

     

    + Two (2) years of ground care and maintenance, greenhouse, or plant nursery general labor work related to the position.

    REQUIRED COMPETENCIES:

    + Hand Tool Proficiency: Utilize hand tools such as shovels, rakes, pruning saws, hand saws, hedge trimmers, and brush trimmers to perform daily grounds and building maintenance tasks.

    + Power Equipment Operation: Operate a variety of vehicles and power equipment including mowers, tractors, snow blowers, and electric clippers in support of irrigation, turf care, snow removal, storm drainage, and general landscaping functions.

    + Irrigation System Management: Demonstrate knowledge in the design, operation, and maintenance of irrigation systems. Responsibilities include assessing water-related issues, installing and repairing leaks, and maintaining valves and controllers.

    + Turf Management Expertise: Perform turf maintenance duties such as mowing, aeration, fertilization, and disease identification to ensure healthy and aesthetically pleasing lawn areas.

    + Plant and Foliage Care: Maintain and enhance landscaping through planting, pruning, and replacing flowers, foliage, and other plant materials as needed.

    + Pest and Disease Identification: Assist with the identification and reporting of plant diseases and pest infestations to support proactive landscape care.

    + Technology Skills: Use Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel), Outlook, Intranet platforms, and specialized irrigation or automation software for effective communication, record keeping, and operational support.

    + Communication: Maintain clear and professional communication with supervisors, team members, and other stakeholders through phone, email, written correspondence, and in-person interactions.

     

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Must possess and maintain a valid State of Colorado driver's license to operate college vehicles and pass an MVR. Must submit to and successfully complete a pre-employment background check. Felony convictions or convictions of crimes of moral turpitude or convictions of misdemeanors related to the job duties may disqualify you from consideration for this position. Should your background check reveal any charges and convictions, it is your responsibility to provide Front Range Community College, Office of Human Resources with an official disposition of the charges.

     

    NOTE: An essential function of this position requires exertion of up to 100 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 lbs. of force frequently, and/or up to 20 lbs. of force constantly to move objects (i.e. lifting equipment, pushing grounds equipment, removing snow, etc.). It also requires constant or frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, pushing, pulling and reaching. A successful candidate must be able to follow verbal communications and be able to read and comprehend written directions on labels, machinery and in manuals, etc. Also, must be able to interpret written directives, policies, guidelines and memos.
