Job Summary
The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), and the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of Michigan invite applications for one Lecturer I position at 100.0% effort for the Fall 2025 term. This appointment is scheduled to begin on August 25, 2025 and end on December 31, 2025.
We seek qualified applicants to teach discussion sections for COMPLIT 141: Great Performances. This position is pending budgetary approval and enrollment demand. The selected candidate may be hired to teach up to three sections, subject to enrollment. The effort for the first section is 50%. Subsequent effort is 25% per section.

Responsibilities*
Lecturers attend required performances (usually weekend evenings); lead three discussion sections (meeting for one hour on each Wednesday and Friday from 9-10 AM, 10-11 AM, & 12-1 PM); attend Tuesday lectures and/or facilitate writing workshops (1-3 PM), hold regularly scheduled weekly office hours for individual consultation with students; evaluate student writing; meet once a week with professor and GSI/Lecturer team for course planning (time to be arranged), and evaluate and grade student materials. Attend GSI/Lecturer training scheduled for Thursday, August 21, 2025. A typical full-time (100% effort) load for a Lecturer I in the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts is three courses per semester. Two full-time positions are available.
COMPLIT 141: GREAT PERFORMANCES: This writing-intensive course is an introduction to performances presented around the University of Michigan, including concert music, theater, musical theater, opera, dance, and other performing arts. Students will develop critical skills in thinking and writing about performance, while also exploring various ideas about "liveness" in performance, considering what makes a "great" performance, and reflecting on the relationship between performance and social change. This course fulfills the first-year writing requirement (FYWR) for students. Further details about featured performances will be announced in August.
Required Qualifications*
Degree requirement: PhD in Literature or another humanities department, including Performance Studies, Music, Theater, and Dance. The selection criteria used for this search is based on how the applicant's education and experience meets the required minimum qualifications for the position. Excellence in teaching and instruction will be the principal criteria used to select the successful candidate.
Desired Qualifications*
Applicants should also demonstrate previous experience in teaching writing (for LSA FYWR or other writing-intensive courses).
