    The School of Oceanography has a unique opportunity for a First Assistant Engineer.

     

    The position of First Assistant Engineering Officer is aboard the research Vessel Thomas G. Thompson, a global oceanographic research ship of approximately 3100 gross tons. This position is given delegated authority under the Chief Engineer and oversees the day-to-day operations of the engineering department.

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** **Managerial

    • Report to the Chief Engineer;

    • Follow the Chief’s Standing Orders;

    • Conduct training;

    • Assign and schedule work for engineering personnel;

    • Supervise engineering personnel;

    • Stand engine room watches;

    • Responsible for inventory of replacement and spare parts, fuels, lubricants and other provisions necessary for the operation of the machinery of the vessel;

    • Provide administrative support to the chief engineer in the compilation of reports or gathering of data;

    Technical

    • Operate and maintain AC-to-DC propulsion systems;

    • Operate and maintain auxiliary machinery;

    • Responsible for the maintenance of machine shop and equipment;

    • Responsible for the maintenance and readiness of various plants;

    • Direct routine maintenance and emergency repair of propulsion and auxiliary machinery and electrical systems.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

    A U.S. Coast Guard First Assistant Engineer’s license valid for operation of a 6000 HP inspected ocean motor vessel.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • The U.S. Coast Guard First Assistant Engineer's license valid for operation of a 6000 HP inspected ocean motor vessel should be for a vessel of unlimited gross tonnage.

    • Significant experience with diesel electric powered ocean research ship, 6000 HP.

    • Knowledge and experience with Caterpillar engines, in particular 3516Cs, TKY-Series and C32s RSD-Series, both mechanical and electrical, including Auto-Maskin Engine Management System;

    • Knowledge of Wärtsilä control systems or equivalent;

    • Knowledge of Siemens AC/DC Drives;

    • Knowledge of Siemens Automation Systems;

    • Knowledge of Dief or equivalent Power Management System;

    • Proven history of working with maintenance management systems;

    • Proven knowledge of refrigeration systems for ship’s HVAC and domestic systems, Carrier knowledge is an asset;

    • Experience with Navigation Electronics Systems;

    • Experience with Kongsberg Dynamic Positioning Systems.
