POSITION PURPOSE
The College of Engineering (CoE) at the University of Washington is seeking a Director of Facilities to provide oversight and leadership in the planning, design, construction, and stewardship of infrastructure projects that advance the mission of the College of Engineering. This position is housed in the Engineering Dean’s Office and reports directly to the Vice Dean.
This role will play a pivotal role in enabling transformative learning, teaching, research, and administrative experiences by ensuring all facilities initiatives are aligned with the College’s Strategic Plan, and its commitment to Engineering Excellence for the Public Good.
POSITION COMPLEXITIES
The Director of Facilities represents the College of Engineering in all matters related to facilities development and utilization. This includes active participation on campus-wide committees, regular engagement with internal and external stakeholders, and serving as the College’s primary liaison with central facilities units, trades, and service providers. The Director will also provide leadership and direction to the College’s Facilities Team, overseeing operations, setting priorities, and delegating responsibilities to ensure responsive, high-quality service.
In addition, the Director supports a community of practice among facilities staff across the College promoting collaboration, sharing of expertise, and alignment of best and consistent practices to meet infrastructure needs.
POSITION DIMESIONS AND IMPACT TO THE UNIVERSTIY
The College of Engineering maintains a significant and growing footprint across campus, encompassing classrooms, administrative offices, research laboratories, and shared user facilities. As the College expands to support new interdisciplinary centers and deepen partnerships with industry, the Director of Facilities plays a critical role in ensuring that both existing and emerging spaces effectively support these evolving needs. This position serves as the College’s primary point of contact for campus units on all matters related to facilities planning, space management, and capital projects. Additionally, the Director represents the College in all matters related to safety, ensuring compliance with university policies and regulatory requirements while fostering a safe and functional environment for teaching, research, and collaboration.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** **Facility Development & Utilization
+ Direct the planning, development, improvement, and utilization of College of Engineering facilities to meet current demands and support future growth. This includes oversight of research centers, instructional spaces, and administrative offices.
+ Promote and expand shared user facilities while supporting existing facilities such as the Molecular Analysis Facility (MAF), Washington Nanofabrication Facility (WNF), Kirsten Wind Tunnel (KWT), various machine shops and others.
+ Foster collaboration and resource-sharing models that enhance capabilities and access.
+ Oversee the execution of approved biennial Major and Minor Capital projects, ensuring effective project management, adherence to timelines, and alignment with design and operational objectives
+ Direct the collection, analysis, and management of data related to space utilization and inventory.
+ Lead the College’s response to campus-wide space management efforts and ensure accurate, timely reporting.
+ Maintain proactive and consistent communication with College units and research centers to stay informed of emerging facility needs, operational challenges, and space-related opportunities.
+ Collaboration with College units to identify, assess, and address facility-related challenges, evaluate alternatives, develop scopes and schedules – following projects from start to completion.
+ Communicate unit and research center facilities and infrastructure needs to College leadership and guiding decision-making based on strategic importance and feasibility. **Campus Partnerships, Engagement, and Compliance**
+ Act as the College’s primary point of contact with UW Facilities, including Project Delivery Group, Campus Architecture and Planning, Engineering Services, Real Estate, and Maintenance & Construction.
+ Foster collaborative relationships to ensure successful delivery and maintenance of College spaces.
+ Represent the College in all matters related to health, safety, and compliance both within the College and at the campus level.
+ Ensure timely coordination with campus partners on evolving safety standards and operational protocols.
+ Oversee and ensure compliance with University of Washington Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) regulations, policies, and best practices across all College of Engineering facilities to support a safe, sustainable, and health-conscious environment for faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
+ Participate in, or delegate appropriate representation for, meetings and committees involving facilities design reviews, value engineering, construction coordination, inspections, and other related activities.
+ Support or lead presentations to stakeholders as needed.
+ Provide clear and timely communication regarding facility-related matters—including safety updates, capital projects, construction activities, and renovation efforts—to impacted units, research centers, and other College stakeholders.
+ Lead a College-wide community of practice for facilities staff, promoting collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and peer support across units and research centers.
+ Promote the adoption of consistent, scalable best practices in facilities management, operations, and space planning within the units to ensure alignment with College and University standards.
+ Collaborate with College and unit leadership to identify and evaluate opportunities for shared services, shared positions, or centralized support models that enhance efficiency and promote staffing stability in the facilities functions.
+ Conduct cost-benefit analysis and service impact of shared infrastructure solutions, including maintenance, safety, and space utilization functions. **Facilities Strategic Planning**
+ Lead the development and implementation of the College’s facilities strategy, aligning short- and long-term planning with College priorities and needs.
+ Oversee the College’s program renewal fund process, ensuring strategic allocation and effective utilization of financial resources to support facility improvements.
+ Partner with College leadership to support major capital planning, including the development of budgets, prioritization of capital needs, and execution of capital projects.
+ Advocate for the College’s research and educational infrastructure needs, ensuring alignment with UW’s capital planning framework and long-range development strategies.
+ Identify and address institutional policies or practices that impact facilities operations, advancing solutions to support efficient maintenance, sustainability, and infrastructure reliability. **Facilities Team Supervision**
+ Lead and manage the College of Engineering Dean’s Office Facilities Team, including direct supervision of the Facilities Manager and Facilities Program Operations Specialist.
+ Define performance expectations, establish work plans, provide regular coaching, mentorship, and administer formal annual performance evaluations for direct reports and team members.
+ Oversee work planning and delegate responsibilities strategically to ensure effective execution of facilities operations, space planning, and project support functions. **Other Duties as Assigned**
+ Participate in College-level meetings, contribute to internal committees, and represent the College of Engineering on University-wide committees, task forces, and working groups.
+ Other related duties as needed.This role is critical to shaping the future of the College of Engineering’s research and educational environment, ensuring world-class infrastructure that supports innovation and academic excellence. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor's degree in facilities management, construction project management, or related field.
+ A minimum of five years’ experience in facilities in positions of increasing complexity and responsibility. **Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.** **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Demonstrated experience in managing capital projects.
+ Demonstrated ability to read and understand construction drawings, schedules and budgets.
+ Demonstrated knowledge in safety – ability to recognize and address unsafe conditions.
+ Demonstrated experience working both independently and in collaborative team environments.
+ Ability to prioritize and complete complex assignments efficiently and on time.
+ Demonstrated excellent client service skills and ability to work with people of various levels of technical background.
+ Excellent oral and written communication skills.
+ Excellent interpersonal and collaborative skills. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Familiarity with the University of Washington’s processes and procedures related to capital projects, safety, and maintenance.
+ Experience with space allocation in a constrained environment.
