POSITION PURPOSE
The Johnsen Laboratory Research Program is dedicated to improving clinical testing, diagnosis and care of patients with blood disorders through the translation of new knowledge and laboratory innovations.
The Research Technologist 2 will work in the laboratory in human subjects research including sample intake, processing, and data and LIMS management; conduct genomic data analysis; perform basic molecular biology techniques; complete tasks that demonstrate an understanding of principles of human genetics and genomics; and have procedural skills commensurate with experience. Additionally, this position proficiently utilizes R and Python and genomics analysis tools. The Research Technologist 2 is expected to have excellent communication and organizational skills
POSITION COMPLEXITIES
The Division of Hematology and Oncology has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time **Research Technologist 2 (NE S SEIU 925 RT)** in the Johnsen Laboratory. The Johnsen Laboratory Research Program is dedicated to improving the diagnosis and care of people with blood disorders through advancement of understanding of the underlying biology and laboratory innovations to improve clinical testing. The Johnsen Laboratory is particularly focused on inherited bleeding disorders and how blood disorders impact females and families.
This position is required to use independent judgment, knowledge of clinical and translational research operations to effectively promote a collaborative work environment.
The Research Technologist 2 will report to the PI and is responsible for ensuring that all projects they work on are in alignment with the laboratory’s scientific goals. This position will be responsible for developing new software and maintaining and upgrading existing software for data analysis. This position will frequently use data analysis tools such as R and Python. This position will require the ability to work collaboratively with a diverse research team.

The University of Washington's Division of Hematology and Oncology is located at the UW Medical Center (UWMC), the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center (FHCC), Harborview Medical Center (HMC), the VA Puget Sound Health Care System, and the UW Medicine South Lake Union (UW SLU). Over the past 25 years, members of the Division have developed the world's leading bone marrow transplant program. In addition, members of the Division have made substantial contributions to many other areas of cancer treatments, and novel forms of chemotherapy and hormonal therapy. Our Division is deeply committed to maintaining its position as one of the leading centers for research and treatment of cancer in the world.
**DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** Data and Sample Management - 40%
+ Coordinate clinical research data.
+ Document chain of custody of clinical research repository samples.
+ Intake and process human samples into a biorepository.
+ Organize and input clinical research and experimental data in the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS).
+ Contribute to the design of new forms and protocols.
+ Perform record keeping tasks, data collection, data entry.Computation and Data Analysis - 30%
+ Develop new software for genomics data analysis pipeline under supervision of senior personnel.
+ Maintain software documentation.
+ Upgrade existing software.
+ Perform analysis of genetic data sets.
+ Generate first pass reports of genetics results.
+ Update genomic variant annotation tools.Lab Management and Organization – 15%
+ Prepare common reagents.
+ Perform standard laboratory assays.
+ Manage laboratory inventory.
+ Work with other staff to ensure the lab runs smoothly, including dishwashing, restocking of reagents, upkeep of chemical inventories and MSDS, etc.Molecular Biology Laboratory Work – 10%
+ Collaborate with senior students, fellows, and other PIs on research projects involving the following methodologies:o Cell culture.o Genetic modification.o Molecular and functional analysis.
+ Perform molecular cloning, transfection, and generation of lentivirus.
+ Conduct protein assays including ELISA, western blot, and enzymatic assays.Other - 5%
+ Provide input into and occasionally lead the design of new assays and experiments for the lab and other collaborative projects.
+ Work with students and fellows as needed to advance research projects.
+ Conduct laboratory tasks as assigned/needed. **MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**
+ Bachelor’s Degree in an appropriate field of technology or science.
+ One year of research experience equivalent to Research Technologist I or one year of full-time post-baccalaureate college in an appropriate field of science or technology. Professional level experience may be substituted, year-for-year, for the formal academic degree. **ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS**
+ Proficiency in R and Python coding languages. **DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS**
+ Human blood sample processing.
+ DNA and RNA sample preparation for downstream nucleotide applications and techniques such as DNA and RNA quantification, genomic PCR, cDNA library preparation, NGS library preparation, and DNA/RNA sequencing methods.
+ Mammalian tissue culture, transfection, transduction, protein expression, or related techniques.
+ Immunological and molecular principles and techniques such as ELISA, IP, western blot, antibody modification, or related techniques.
+ Work in a BSL-2 environment and work in DNA/RNA clean spaces.
+ Familiarity with standard software in the environment such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
+ Familiarity with Laboratory Inventory Management Systems (LIMS).
+ Understand database management principles.
