    The Director of the Stanford iGEM Program will oversee the research, development, administration, and growth of the university’s iGEM (International Genetically Engineered Machine) program. This position is integral to fostering innovation and excellence in synthetic biology education, research, guiding interdisciplinary student teams, and enhancing Stanford’s leadership and impact within the global iGEM community.

    In this role, you will** **:

    + Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.

    + Lead strategic planning for the program/entity.

    + Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty areas.

    + Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.

    + Teach or co-teach courses; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff.

    + Coach and mentor program staff.

    Education & Experience (Required)** **:

    + Advanced degree and five years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience. For jobs with financial responsibilities, experience managing a budget and developing financial plans. Experience developing program partnerships and funding sources.

    Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Required)** **:

    + Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.

    + Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.

    + Ability to oversee and direct staff.

    + Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

    Education & Experience (Desired)** **:

    + PhD in Genetics, Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering, Molecular Biology, or a related field.

    + Proven track record of leadership in academia, industry, or non-profit organizations.

    + Expertise in synthetic biology, particularly in interdisciplinary and innovative applications.

    + Experience mentoring students and leading interdisciplinary teams.

    + Strong communication and organizational skills, with a collaborative and inclusive mindset.

    + Ability to secure funding through grants, sponsorships, or partnerships.

    + Familiarity with iGEM competition structure, goals, and expectations is preferred.

    + Experience as a faculty member or program director in a university setting.

    + Background in synthetic biology outreach and engagement, with a history of successful team leadership.

    + Strong connections with synthetic biology leaders and organizations, including the iGEM Foundation.

    + Demonstrated success in program management, fundraising, and interdisciplinary collaboration.

    + A vision for expanding iGEM’s impact through innovative research, community engagement, and cross-campus partnerships.

    Working Conditions** **:

    + May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.

    + May travel locally.

    + Occasional overnight travel.

    Physical Requirements** **:

    + Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.

    + Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 40 pounds.

    + Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.

    + Ability to use voice to present information/communicate with others.

    + On-campus mobility.

    Pay Range:

    The expected pay range for this position is $140,184 to $175, 260 per annum.

     

    The actual pay will be pro-rated based on the 50% FTE.

The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
