Summary:
Vighter is recruiting multiple Sterile Processing Technicians to provide patient care support at the Charleston, SC VA Medical Center in Charleston, SC . The VA Center is rated as a complex medical facility, therefore provides care to Veterans locally and from surrounding states.
The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for the decontamination, cleaning, inspection, assembly, packaging, and sterilization of surgical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment. This role ensures that all items are properly processed and available for patient care and surgical procedures in compliance with safety and infection control standards. The technician completes appropriate medical record forms in compliance with VA guidelines and policies on each patient. Verify the content and correctness of all recorded entries in the patient record. All documentation, records and reports must meet or exceed established VA standards to include, but not limited to timeliness, legibility, accuracy, content, and signature. The outpatient record shall be completed the same day the patient is seen.
Principle Accountabilities:
+ Collect, sort, and transport used surgical instruments and equipment for decontamination.
+ Clean and disinfect instruments manually and using automated equipment (e.g., ultrasonic washers, sterilizers).
+ Inspect instruments for cleanliness, functionality, and signs of damage or wear.
+ Assemble instrument sets according to established protocols.
+ Package instruments and trays and ensure accurate labeling before sterilization.
+ Operate and monitor sterilization equipment (steam, gas plasma, etc.) according to manufacturer instructions and hospital policies.
+ Maintain proper documentation of sterilization processes and equipment maintenance.
+ Monitor inventory levels and report shortages or damaged items.
+ Adhere to all hospital infection control and safety procedures.
+ Communicate effectively with surgical teams and other hospital departments.
+ Performs other duties that may be assigned from time to time.
Knowledge and Skills :
+ Must have practical knowledge of theory, principles, practice, and techniques of asepsis to prevent the spread of infection.
+ Must have practical knowledge of microbiology and the principles as they apply to surgical supply operations as they relate to the resistance of microorganisms to external destructive agents such as heat, and chemicals used for sterilization and High-Level Disinfection.
+ Must have a working knowledge of standard procedures for steam autoclaving including, but not necessarily limited to: (1) Biological testing of sterilization efficacy utilizing commercially available incubated biological test vials. (2) Chemical indicators, internal and external, used for identifying steam sterilization exposure. (3) Use, purpose, and correct interpretation of the Bowie-Dick test. (4) Interpretation and proper recording of results of all sterilization tests.
+ Must have a working knowledge of standard procedures for use of chemical sterilization such as Sterrad, including, but not limited to: (1) Biological testing of sterilization efficacy utilizing commercially available incubated biological test vials. (2) Chemical indicators, internal and external, used for identifying sterilization exposure. (3) Processes for routine operator maintenance, including replenishment of sterilant cartridges. (4) Interpretation and proper recording of results of all sterilization tests.
+ Must have a working knowledge of standard procedures for use of HLD systems such as Medivator Advantage, Trophon, and manual HLD utilizing Cidex OPA. (1) Must be aware of and capable of performing on a routine daily basis all testing and quality assurance procedures associated with the use of these devices and chemicals.
+ Must have a good working knowledge of the availability, economics, use, operation, maintenance, assembly, and disassembly of the full range of surgical supplies, instruments, equipment, and the specific cleaning, sterilizing, and storage requirements of each.
+ Must have exceptional customer service skills. Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
+ Employees shall be technically proficient in the skills necessary to fulfill the job requirements, including ability to speak, understand, read and write English fluently.
+ Ability to work in a fast-paced changing environment with limited supervision
Education:
+ Holds a high school diploma.
Qualifications:
Sterile Processing Services Technicians must meet one (1) or more of the following requirements:
+ Certification as a Certified Registered Central Service Technician (CRCST) or higher by the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Material Management (IAHCSMM/HSPA).
+ Graduation from a nationally recognized CRCST training program with a minimum of 2 current years of documented work in the field.
+ Graduation from a nationally recognized Operating Room Technician training program with a minimum of 2 current years of documented work experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
+ Graduation from a US military training program for Surgical Technicians with a minimum of 2 current years of documented work experience in a Sterile Processing Service environment.
+ VA Level 2 certification with a minimum of 2 years of current work experience in the SPS environment.
Duty Hours / On-call Requirements:
+ The expected duty hours for this position are 8 hours per day and 5 days per week. However, this key position supporting 24/7/365 operations which may require work to be conducted in the day, at night, on weekends, and during holidays.

Physical Requirements :
+ Must be able to sit for more than 8 hours per day, must be willing to work overtime if necessary.
+ Must be able to use an elevator or walk up and down stairs.
+ Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and carry up to 10 feet.
+ Must be able to routinely grasp or handle objects, use finger dexterity, bend elbows/knees and reach above and below shoulders.
+ Must be able to read and interpret handwritten and typewritten print.
+ Must be able to communicate by voice and detect sound by ear.
+ Must be able to perform duties in an indoor or outdoor environment
+ Must undergo Urine Drug Screening (UDS).
