    Role Overview:

    Alameda Health System is hiring! TheDirector of Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) provides strategic leadership and operational oversight for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of environmental health, occupational safety, and regulatory compliance programs across Alameda Health System. This role ensures system-wide adherence to federal, state, and local regulations—including Cal/OSHA—and accreditation standards such as those from The Joint Commission and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.

     

    Working collaboratively with hospital administrators, clinical leaders, facilities management, and regulatory agencies, the Director leads initiatives to reduce workplace hazards, prevent unsafe practices, and foster a culture of safety, accountability, and sustainability. The position is responsible for developing data-driven safety strategies, overseeing regulatory programs, and ensuring that all facilities within the healthcare system are aligned with best practices in environmental and occupational safety.

     

    This position is part of the Alameda Health System Support Services team and plays a critical role in advancing organizational goals related to staff safety, patient care quality, and environmental stewardship.

     

    **DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:** NOTE: Following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

     

    Develops, implements, and standardizes employee health and safety policies and procedures in alignment with federal, state, and local regulations, including Cal/OSHA, EPA, DOT, CMS, and Joint Commission requirements.

     

    + Provides strategic direction for environmental health and safety (EHS) programs across the healthcare system, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and regulatory compliance.

    + Leads injury and illness prevention initiatives, conducts trend analysis, and oversees the development of corrective actions to reduce risk and promote a safe work environment.

    + Oversees system-wide risk reduction and environmental compliance programs, including hazardous materials management, waste disposal, indoor air quality, infection control support, and emergency preparedness.

    + Partners with leaders across departments—such as Facilities, HR, Infection Prevention, and Clinical Operations—to integrate safety standards into daily operations and strategic initiatives.

    + Chairs the Environment of Care and Workplace Violence Committees; reports into other key governance bodies, including the Quality and Safety Committee.

    + Supervises EHS staff; manages staffing, budgeting, resource allocation, and operational planning for the department.

    + Conducts audits, inspections, and investigations of incidents, near misses, and exposures; leads root cause analyses and implements preventive measures.

    + Provides coaching, training, and technical expertise to staff and facility teams on current safety protocols, regulatory changes, and best practices.

    + Develops and delivers training programs on workplace safety, hazardous materials handling, and emergency response for clinical and non-clinical staff.

    + Publishes tools, guidance, and communications to support system-wide safety practices and compliance efforts.

    + Monitors EHS metrics and performance indicators; prepares reports and recommendations for executive leadership.

    + Supports sustainability and environmental stewardship initiatives in collaboration with facilities and supply chain teams.

    **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS** :

     

    Minimum Required Education: Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: Environmental Health, Occupational Safety and Health, Industrial Hygiene, Public Health, Environmental Science, Safety Engineering, Related scientific or technical field

     

    Preferred Education: Master’s degree in one of the following: Public Health (MPH) with a focus on Environmental or Occupational Health, Environmental Health or Safety Management, Industrial Hygiene, Healthcare Administration (with EHS focus), Environmental Engineering, Risk Management.

     

    Required Experience: Minimum of 8 to 10 years of progressive leadership experience in Environmental Health and Safety (EHS), with a strong background in healthcare or hospital system environments. Must include demonstrated experience in emergency and disaster planning, as well as coordination and compliance with Environment of Care standards. A deep understanding of healthcare-specific regulatory requirements, risk management, and safety practices is essential.

     

    Required Certifications: FEMA ICS 100, 200, 300, 400, 700, and/or Certified Emergency Manager, One or more of the Preferred Certifications below is mandatory.

     

    Preferred Certifications (must be from a professional accrediting Board): Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) by the Board of Global EHS Credentialing or similar credential preferred, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) certification, Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM), Healthcare Environmental Manager (HEM), Certified Healthcare Safety Professional (CHSP).
