    Summary This position is assigned to the Department of Veteran Affairs, Veterans Health Administration (VHA), Veterans Transportation Services (VTS), Emergency Medicine Service, Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System, Prescott, AZ. Responsibilities Duties include, but are not be limited to, the following: Operates or utilizes various vehicles and emergency/medical equipment, tools and supplies which may include ambulance, blood pressure cuff, glucose monitor, AED, 12 lead EKG, non-invasive airway equipment, oxygen administration devices pulse oximetry monitor, medical supplies, radio communications equipment and general office equipment. Prioritizes transports for patients and employs a variety of established techniques, methods and equipment during transport to the appropriate medical facility. Transport patients in need of Advance Life Support level care to and from various locations including inter-facility transport. Assist in transporting non-ambulatory patients, as directed, and ensure all safety protocols for these particular patient groups are followed throughout the transport. Performs assessments to obtain history, status of patient's neurological system, cardiovascular system, circulatory system, skeletal system, orthopedic system, motor and sensory skills and level of consciousness for the purpose of safe transport. Perform patient triage and take/records patient's vital signs as needed. Provide and gather information on the human body structure, function, illnesses and diseases, and the treatment procedure supporting patient charting. Cleans and sanitizes all reusable equipment and ensures all disposable equipment is disposed of in the appropriate manner. Follows facility infections control guidelines. Conducts patient assessments, to ensure safe of vehicle transport. Conducts examination of the patient's condition to determine the need for assistance when entering and exiting the vehicle. Understand indications, dosing, and administer oral, intramuscular, and intravenous medications. Conducts or assists with the training of personnel in CPR, basic and advanced emergency medical care techniques. Administers Basic and Advanced Life Support care in accordance with established medical standards, which may include providing CPR, manual defibrillation, synchronized cardioversion, and transcutaneous pacing manual defibrillation and or medications. Provides respiratory care, including intubation and ventilation management. Respond to on-campus emergency calls and provide advanced life support to patients in concordance with established protocols. Respond to on-site accidents and other emergencies involving injury and illnesses, sometimes encountering situations which may be life threatening. Determine and prioritizes appropriate medical treatment/procedures and need for additional assistance. Make an independent preliminary assessment of the patient's condition and select from a variety of prescribed protocols the one that is considered appropriate under the given circumstances. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/01/2025. Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-09 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-8. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade. Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment. You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below: Basic Requirements: Individual Occupational Requirement You must possess the technician experience that requires application of knowledge, methods, and techniques of the Medical Care Transportation Technician. Grade Level GS-9 Requirements: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-8 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Providing transportation of patients; Responding to accidents and other emergencies involving injury and/or illness; Administering basic and advanced life support care. Certification: Possess and maintain current Basic Life Support Provider certification and Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification. Possess a Paramedic License. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: The Medical Care Transportation Technician work involves extended periods of heavy moving and lifting of patients in a variety of situations. Generally, the work requires recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, and positioning of patients, frequently under adverse conditions or in confined areas. Paramedics may be required to spend prolonged periods in protective breathing apparatus and protective clothing during chemical, nuclear, biological, or hazardous materials incidents/ exercises.
