    Summary Interventional technologists use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. Technologist works closely with other clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, high quality diagnostic/therapeutic exam results, and patient satisfaction. Major duties include, but are not limited to: Prepares contrast materials under the direction of the Interventional Radiologist for the purpose of performing Angio/Interventional examinations requiring injectable contrast and enteric contrast. Use of needles, syringes, power injectors, ultrasound equipment, catheters, stents, picc lines, GI tubes, CO2 for some arteriograms, contrast media, wedges, bolus bags, and enema bags. Be aware of adverse reactions on the part of the patient require immediate attention so that harm does not come to the patient or equipment. Maintains effective control of Angio/Interventional area by scheduling, coordinating, planning, organizing and executing the daily work potential to expedite workflow patterns within the Angio / Interventional Department. Enters patients into the Computerized Patient Record System. Performs Quality Control procedures, which may include (but not exclusively) the following: 1) Daily tube warm up and calibration 2) Lead apron & glove radiation attenuation /penetration survey 3) Daily computer file maintenance. 4) Checks Temperature of contrast warmer daily. Keeps abreast of technological advances in the fields of Angio/Interventional Radiology and incorporates these advances into present and new procedures and in-service educational programs for the radiology technical staff. Knowledge of basic nursing practices and first aid as related to radiology including: emergency cardiac arrest procedures, principles of hypodermic, subcutaneous, intramuscular, and intravenous injections. Assists with most exams utilizing surgical sterile techniques. Adheres to hospital infection control and safety policies/techniques with emphasis on sterile technique; the storage of sterile supplies; the disposal of body fluids and 'sharps'; proper attire; hand washing practices; and continuing education. Troubleshoots equipment used in Angio/Interventional and is able to make minor repairs and/or adjustments. Exercises extreme caution in the handling and safeguarding of all radiation producing equipment. Must recognize and report major equipment malfunctions within a timely manner to Biomedical service representative. Trains rotating x-ray students and technologists in Angio/Interventional procedures; recommends, coordinates, submits, and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols. Instructs other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Participates in the education of angio technologists. Responsible for explaining exams to patients or families in terms the patient will comprehend as well as understanding potential hazards that may occur as a result of the exam. May be required by procedure or patient's condition to monitor vital signs, recognize allergic reactions and initiate cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Receives and interprets all radiology requests and consults pertaining to computer, and registers requests, cancels, and edits exams via the computerized patient record system (CPRS). Practices radiation safety in order to reduce exposure to patients, staff and self. All other duties as assigned. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), [or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable]. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. In modalities that require advanced certification, to support their continued development, technologists who do not possess an advanced certification may be provided on the job training with oversight from a certified radiologic technologist. Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the 2 equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). NOTE: Assignment to the clinical program director requires meeting JRCERT minimum educational standards as noted in the assignment description. English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-10 - Advanced Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist: Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (*GS-9) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. *Examples of experience at the GS-9 level include, but are not limited to: Ability to balance the needs of patients and staff while still performing complex scans and procedures; Knowledge of techniques for gathering relevant information from the medical record, significant others, and health care providers; Ability to assess factors that may contraindicate the procedure; Knowledge of basic first aid and basic life support practices related to radiography; Knowledge of physical assessment, aseptic techniques, intravenous methods and techniques and universal precautions; Knowledge of pre-procedural, procedural, and post-procedural care of patients. AND, The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: i. Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes. ii. Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures. iii. Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment. iv. Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography) studies. Assignments. For all assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Employees are trained to work in one or more difficult and complex modalities performing procedures related to these modalities as well as performing general diagnostic procedures. At this grade level, any assignment in a single modality must demonstrate significant complexity. Such assignments are unique, perhaps with expert specialization in complex areas of radiologic technology, Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA) regulations, and intermediate QM type duties within the program. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-10 to GS-10. Physical Requirements: Work is primarily performed in patient care areas. Heavy lifting, moderate carrying, pushing, reaching above shoulders, repeated bending, use of hand-eye coordination, fingers coordination, both hands required, repeated walking, standing, ability to stand and work while wearing a lead apron for possibly long periods of time.
