TITLE: Lab Tech Spec II, Blood Bank
DUTIES: Develop, test, and establish new laboratory procedures. Coordinate their implementation and evaluation. Identify, troubleshoot, and solve complex problems. Make internal and external presentations regarding advanced laboratory topics. Troubleshoot instrument and equipment malfunctions. Order and maintain supplies and equipment for developmental testing. Field tests and evaluate reagents and equipment for use in the laboratory; recommend the purchase of new equipment or supplies. Work with manager to formulate plan for professional development. Attend educational in-services as appropriate. Participate in professional activities and organizations to maintain knowledge of current trends, practices, and developments. Assist other laboratory supervisory personnel in developing and monitoring the quality of laboratory procedures to ensure results remain within established control levels. Teach theory and clinical procedures to Medical Technology students, graduate students, and pathology residents. Develop and conduct in-service training and continuing education programs for technologists. Determine the need for, develop, evaluate, and implement new or modified procedures or techniques to provide improved patient care. Perform advanced and routine procedures as required. Develop teaching protocols for specialized testing. Research documents and journals for developments in the field. Perform related responsibilities as required.
REQUIREMENTS: Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology, Clinical Lab Science or a related chemical, physical or biological science and two (2) years of experience as a Medical Technologist or related role where required experience gained.
SPECIAL SKILLS: Also requires experience in the following:
+ Certification by one of the following accreditation agencies: American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), the American Medical Technologists (AMT), the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA), the American Association of Bioanalysts (ABB), or another agency approved by the GA Department of Community Health, generalist or categorical if applicable;
+ Working at a large hospital setting lab and working at a high volume and fast pace;
+ Monitoring and ensuring adequate inventory supply; including blood and blood products. Communicating blood supply shortages to supervisor and medical staff, experience triaging orders, contacting alternate suppliers, communicating with clinicians regarding delays in filling blood product orders;
+ Large instrumentation with high throughput and performing instrument maintenance and troubleshooting;
+ Clearly understanding and communicating with other departments such as nurses, clinicians, customer services, other lab departments, co-workers, etc.;
+ Two (2) years of blood bank experience to include independently completing routine antibody workups in a high-volume setting, serologic crossmatches, component preparation, and equipment maintenance;
+ Two (2) years with massive transfusion protocols; and
+ Two (2) years with gel technology in a transfusion medicine setting.
