Basic Function: The Counselor helps students attain an optimum level of personal and social adjustment. In order to coordinate a comprehensive counseling program, the counselor works closely with the other staff and administration Provide social-emotional learning for both students and staff. Help students overcome problems that impede learning.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Provide individual counseling and group guidance to help students effectively cope personally, socially, and academically.
+ Assist students in evaluating their aptitudes and abilities through the interpretation of individual standardized test scores and other pertinent data, and work with students in evolving education and occupation plans in terms of such evaluation.
+ Consult with parents, teachers, administrators, and supporting agencies concerning the needs and abilities of students.
+ Support PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) for all students in all settings.
+ Work to discover and develop special abilities of students.
+ Remain readily available to students so as to provide counseling that will lead each student to increased personal growth, self-understanding, and maturity.
+ Guide students in their participation in school and community activities.
+ Maintain student records and protect their confidentiality.
+ Provide in-service training in guidance for teachers and student teachers.
+ Work with teachers and other staff members to familiarize them with the general range of services offered and to improve the educational prospects of individual students being counseled.
+ Take an active role in interpreting the school’s objectives to students, parents, and the community at large.
+ Interpret the guidance program to the community.
+ Arrange for tutors.
+ Engage in research and follow-up activities to evaluate counseling techniques.
+ Play an active role on the Special Programs collaborative team.
+ Teach classes.
Specifications/Qualifications:
1. Professional Service License with Professional School Counselor K-8 Endorsement
2. A master’s degree, or its equivalent, representing intensive course work in the principles and practice of educational guidance; educational testing and measurement; counseling; the organization and administration of guidance services; and the psychology of learning.
3. Such alternatives to the above qualification as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable
Working Conditions:1. Includes extremes of temperature and humidity.2. Hazards include stairs and communicable diseases.
Physical requirements: Work is performed while sitting or standing. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
